June Jazz in London: Miles at 100, Judith Owen & Summer Sounds

🎶 From Miles Davis at 100 to Judith Owen and Catherine Lima, explore June’s Jazz London Live featured banner events across London’s Jazz Scene
As London eases into summer, June brings one of the year’s richest jazz calendars, combining major anniversaries, celebrated artists and a wealth of emerging talent across the capital’s clubs and venues. The month begins with a special appearance from the wonderfully charismatic Judith Owen at Bush Hall on 1 June. Acclaimed for her blend of jazz, cabaret and storytelling, Owen continues to build a devoted following with performances that are as entertaining as they are musically compelling.

June also marks a significant milestone in jazz history. On 15 June, Jazz Café celebrates what would have been Miles Davis’ 100th birthday with a special edition of its popular jazz night featuring trumpeter Jay Phelps and an all-star band. Few musicians have shaped modern music as profoundly as Davis, and this promises to be a fitting tribute to one of the art form’s most influential figures.

At Ronnie Scott’s, vocalist Catherine Lima presents Peggy’s Got the Blues on 14 June, a Sunday lunchtime celebration of the blues-infused repertoire of Peggy Lee. Drawing on both classic favourites and lesser-known gems, Lima’s warm and expressive style offers a fresh perspective on one of jazz’s most distinctive voices. June also offers opportunities to hear some of Britain’s finest improvisers in more intimate settings. Saxophonist Iain Ballamy joins pianist Gareth Williams at East Side Jazz Club on 2 June for what promises to be an evening of exceptional musicianship and spontaneous interaction.
Veteran trumpeter Henry Lowther brings his Still Waters project to Karamel on 4 June, whilst exquisite Dutch pianist Conrad Miller appears twice during the first week of the month, Brighton’s Verdict Jazz and Hampstead Jazz showcasing new music from his acclaimed The New Conrad Miller Trio. The capital’s thriving contemporary scene is equally well represented. Five-Way Split, featuring Quentin Collins and Vasilis Xenopoulos, brings together some of London’s most accomplished modern players, while vocalist Eleonora Kouneni launches her eagerly anticipated This Eager Heart EP with a special showcase performance.

Karamel continues its impressive programme throughout the month with Women in Jazz Media presenting Serbian saxophonist and composer Jasna Jovićević on 11 June, Kaiyo’s Jazz Stories series continues featuring trombonist / vocalist extrordinaire Malcolm Earle Smith on 18 June, and the Naomi Gee Wright Band closing out the month on 27 June.

Whether your tastes run to timeless standards, adventurous contemporary jazz, intimate club performances or large-scale celebrations of jazz history, June offers something to discover in every corner of London’s vibrant jazz landscape. As always, Jazz London Live brings together hundreds of listings from venues large and small across the capital. We encourage you to support the artists, venues and promoters who keep London’s jazz scene thriving. Happy listening!
