Rosalie Deighton, Gus MacGregor and Kim Slade live at The Karamel Music Club
Welcome to you all to a new season of songwriter showcases at N22’s friendliest family run venue.
Tonight the acts will be playing a short set each of three or four songs, then returning after the break to play in the round together, in a songwriters’ circle type affair. So who have we got?
/// Gus MacGregor ///
is back on British soil having made a big impact over in Switzerland. Recent features since landing on the shores of Brighton include both Johnnie Walker and Terry Wogan’s BBC Radio 2 shows, Sunday Times Culture section and Word Magazine. There’s an Ethan Johns Americana feel to his record that wouldn’t be out of place on a Ryan Adams or Ray La Montagne album, but we also detected hints of that tremendous Scottish colloquial songsmith Roddy Frame, and maybe a little Lindsey Buckingham in the writing.
/// Rosalie Deighton ///
has survived every capsizing wave the industry can throw at her, she’s got back in, and kept on rowing. Having signed to all manner of big industry fish, from EMI to Chrysalis, to Independiente, she has done what few artists manage after being lashed by that kind of tide – she’s kept touring and making top records. Her latest offering, Burning Boat (see what we did there?) is a classy, jagged collection of heart-on-sleeve stuff that’s just hit the shops. Check out Last Mistake (featuring Jack Savoretti) and If I Had A Gun – it’s as if Emmy Lou Harris has been driven up to Yorkshire by T-Bone Burnett and had her heart wrecked by every bad lad she’s met from Pocklington to Selby and back again along the way. Raw, honest writing.
Completing the lineup tonight is newcomer …
/// Kim Slade ///
His new record Wanderlust is due out soon, a slightly more contemporary feel to what he’s doing – he’s a new artist on us, we hope you’ll enjoy… he’s gigged everywhere from Brighton to Hanoi and back again – but he’s never been to HollyWood Green – and that’s all that matters… check out the vids below. Looking forward to seeing him.
As ever, entry is FREE… come and support the best talent in your local, community minded venue! To save a table call 0208 8298989 or email rsvp@karouselmusic.com

Haringey Literature Live: So you want to write features?
If you’ve always wondered if there’s a writer in you, or if you’re a developing poet, fiction writer or journalist who relishes the opportunity to work with superb tutors, enrol for one of our writing workshop courses at Chocolate Factory 2, N22, with poet Jehane Markham, and journalist/freelance writer Giovanna Iozzi.
Courses cost £75 in advance for a five-workshop course. The workshop sessions are weekly, on Thursdays from 10am to 12.30pm, and are held in the wonderful Factory 21, a converted warehouse room at Chocolate Factory 2, Coburg Road, N22. The programme is designed so that attendees can work through each of the courses in succession, or pick and choose courses as required.
Spaces will be at a premium so email Haringey Literature Live Programme Co-ordinator, Kate Pemberton at kate@collage-arts.org to state which course/courses you’d like to attend and reserve your place.
SO YOU WANT TO WRITE FEATURES? – 15th, 22nd, 29th January, 5th, 12th February 2015, 10am-12.30pm – Workshop practitioner: Giovanna Iozzi
Have you got an idea for a great feature but are not sure how to get it off the ground? Perhaps you want tips for researching a subject or getting the best out of an interview. After a popular run in 2014, the journalism course is back for a 5 week run.
This course will cover all aspects of feature writing: sourcing compelling stories, following lines of research, getting the best interviews and writing punchy copy that entertains and informs.
