Our tutors are offering again poetry, life-writing/memoir, and novels, all by popular demand – but expect new angles, elements and focus in each of these rewarding courses. And why not try something new? Novelists, unlock your work through poetry. Poets, you are the original life-writers so why not try it in prose? Life-writers, I bet you have a novel in there somewhere. Shake it up and enjoy yourselves at the Writing Room!

 

FINDING THE POEM with Paul Lyalls
Wednesdays 12, 19, 26 September, 3, 10 17 October, 10.30am to 1pm

All are welcome on this fun and liberating workshop-based course, whether you are new to writing, or wish to expand your collection of poems, or are a prose writer wanting to explore your writing capabilities. Expect to be highly productive as you learn how to find and unlock poems, let them build, grow and multiply. Exercises in class, focused on tiny details, every day experiences, or life-changing events, will enable you to encapsulate aspects of your internal and external worlds. This is a friendly and constructive course which previous students have described as ‘inspirational’.

 

LIFE WRITING & MEMOIR WORKSHOP with Giovanna Iozzi
Thursdays 13, 20, 27 September, 4, 11, 18 October, 10.30am to 1pm

Do you have a passion for recording your real life experiences? Perhaps you’ve identified different threads and fragments but you’re not quite sure how to form them into a longer piece of work? Whether you’re interested in writing short memoir stories or a longer book of life-writing then this class will help and guide you through your own process as well as helping you to identify key themes in your work. Each week we will use prompts to help us sharpen memories, thoughts and feelings as well as closely reading extracts of published writing. Students will also have the chance to share work and get supportive feedback on their prose.

 

NOVEL WRITING: BUILDING YOUR SKILLS with Sonia Lambert
Thursdays 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 November, 6 December, 10.30am to 1pm

This course will provide a supportive environment in which to build the skills to improve your novel. Each week we will be looking at issues such as inspiration, character, view point, setting, plot, and editing. We will try out short writing exercises in class each week and discuss advice on technique. There will also be an opportunity to share extracts from your work in progress during the six weeks.

 

WAYS INTO PRINT AND DIGITAL JOURNALISM with Pat Devereaux
Tuesdays 2, 9 16 October, (half term), 30 October, 6, 13 November, 10.30am to 1pm
Places for Create Your Future participants 

Guardian journalist and editor Pat Devereaux will be talking journalism beyond the news cycle, constructive reporting, building communities on social media, audience first story telling, newsletters, mojo apps, podcasting and more.  This is a practical and awareness raising course with priority given to ethnic minority women on the Create Your Future project.

 

 KIDS CLUB will running every Saturday at Karamel with Paul Lyalls in term times. Reserve your place for 8 to 12 year olds now!
