DESCRIPTION:Band Line Up: Alcyona Mick (Piano)\, Calum Gourlay (Bass)\, Paul Clarvis (Drums) \nAlcyona Mick is a London based pianist and composer\, nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz instrumentalist award in 2023. She has performed internationally working with a wide array of artists and bands including a co-lead duo with saxophonist Tori Freestone\, the London Jazz Orchestra\, Natacha Atlas\, Brigitte Beraha Lucid dreamers\, Josephine Davies’ Satori\, Perfect Stranger\, Casimir Connection\, Randolph Matthews\, Zeroclassikal and many others. \nShe recently featured on an album of improvisations – ‘Convergence & Variations’ with cellist Kate Shortt. As a composer she has worked in the commercial field writing music for documentary\, short film and TV and also performed live to silent film and a music TV series in Istanbul. She won an award for best soundtrack at the Anima Mundi International festival\, Brazil. Alcyona Mick is an unusual powerhouse of a talent’ – MOJO \n…… \nCalum Gourlay – Jazz Bass Calum Gourlay was born in Glasgow and grew up playing in Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra\, The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland and Tommy Smith’s Youth Jazz Orchestra\, in which he was the very first bassist selected from across Scotland aged 16. In 2004 he was the only bassist enrolled for the jazz course at The Royal Academy of Music. He graduated with first class honours in 2008. He has held the acoustic bass chair with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra\, under the direction of Tommy Smith\, since 2006. He has also featured prominently with Tommy Smith’s own quartet. Since 2018 Calum has been a professor of Jazz Bass at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance. \nHis debut album ‘Live at The Ridgeway’ (2015) received rave reviews from the UK jazz press\, not least because of its confident format – a solo\, live recording in front of an intimate audience. In 2019 Calum released his first quartet album ‘New Ears’ on Ubuntu records. In 2020 the album was nominated for both a Scottish Jazz Award and an Ivor Novello Composer \n…… \n‘It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that accomplished percussionist Paul Clarvis has performed with everyone you know and on everything you love. Clarvis was the late Leonard Bernstein’s preferred London percussionist and helped Rick Smith with the drum arrangement for the London Olympics 2012 show-stopping opening\, as well as having worked with high-profile musicians like Mick Jagger\, Stevie Wonder\, Sir Paul McCartney\, and Elton John. \nHis film slate is just as impressive\, including memorable films like “Star Wars\,” “Harry Potter\,” “The Chronicles of Narnia\,” “Twilight\,” “Skyfall\,” “Tron\,” “Shrek\,” and “The Hobbit.” Beyond his ongoing and in-demand work as a session musician\, Clarvis is also an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music \nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ. DESCRIPTION:A soulful jazz-funk quintet \nRapidly establishing themselves as one of the must-see live bands in the UK. GETNOTGOT create musical landscapes that are fused in the Blue Note heritage with contemporary acid-jazz nuances and a funk-fuelled musical energy. \nTheir debut release came in the form of a 4-track EP in January 2023\, whereupon interest from music festivals and jazz clubs soon followed\, whilst the band’s follow-up EP ‘Pull To Open’ was released on 14th June 2024 to critical acclaim – available on digital platforms\, CD and Ltd Edition Orange vinyl! \nThis EP presents the quintet’s first collection of original tunes which reflect the development of the band over the last 24 months of shows\, whilst retains the influences of the past masters of the Soul Jazz and Acid Jazz movements. DESCRIPTION:Band Members: Lior Solomons-Wise – Piano George Johnson – Tenor Saxophone Edouard Le Fuevre – Double Bass Sacha Harlan – Drums \n22-year-old pianist and Dankworth prize winning composer Lior Solomons-Wise brings his quartet to Karamel for an evening of captivating original music. Featuring some of London’s most promising young jazz talents\, audiences can expect to be taken on a musical journey as Lior’s compositions weave simple yet beautiful melodies through enchanting harmonic explorations. Drawing from a diverse palette of influences\, including elements of folk and contemporary jazz\, the quartet creates a sound that is both familiar and refreshingly new. Lior’s compositions reflect a deep awareness of jazz traditions while exploring the boundaries of the genre\, resulting in a performance that promises to be both accessible and intellectually stimulating. \nIn 2023 Lior was awarded the Dankworth Prize for Jazz composition in the small ensemble category. His winning composition ‘Mortar’ was performed by the Guildhall Jazz Orchestra in March 2024. As a performer\, he has graced numerous prestigious venues across the UK\, including EFG Jazz festival appearances\, the 606 Club\, Pizza Express Dean Street and the Vortex Jazz Club. DESCRIPTION:Those in the know are already excited about the rise of trumpeter Klara Devlin on the Birtish jazz scene. \nA finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2024\, Klara’s material draws inspiration mainly from the Bebop and Hard Bop eras\, mixed with a soupcon of Funk and improv\, while her influences span Freddie Hubbard\, Lee Morgan\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Herbie Hancock\, Roy Hargrove\, Chick Corea\, and Wayne Shorter. \n“Klara Devlin\, remember her name\, she is in my opinion one of the most amazing and unique new trumpet voices to emerge onto the UK jazz scene. To coin the famous quote ‘if ya ain’t got it in ya\, ya can’t blow it out’. Klara Devlin definitely has it\, and definitely blows it out of her horn! I’m about 2-3 jazz generations in front of her and I’ve never been this excited about a young musician in a while\, definitely a stylist who’ll be making new waves for the next generation.”Tony Kofi\, saxophonist \nFor over 30 years\, Tomorrow’s Warriors has played a vital role within its community and the wider music industry and has been credited with literally changing the face of UK jazz. (There will always be a seating area dedicated to quieter conversations.) \n🍔 THE FOOD Karamel’s fully vegan menu varies every time! The selection for the night will be announced on a blackboard. It usually includes a few daily specials as well as staples like burgers\, pizzas\, and a variety of delicious sides and desserts. \n🍹 THE DRINKS Beer on tap\, wine by the glass\, and a selection of cocktails and mocktails: Karamel’s fully vegan bar has something for every taste. \n👩‍🎤 THE MUSIC The first part of the evening will feature an open mic night where anyone is welcome to showcase their talents (musical or otherwise)\, opened by Mixer regular Alfie Paca 🦙 \nStarting around 9 PM\, KaraoChris will host karaoke for the rest of the night: sign up to jump on stage and sing your heart out! Karamel have kindly offered a meal for two as a prize for the best singer. \n🤗 ATTENDING Entry to the event is totally free\, but please do support the venue by buying some of their delicious food and drinks (both 100% vegan!). \nAll are welcome\, and we strive to make the event a safe and inclusive space for everyone – no discriminatory or abusive behaviour of any kind will be tolerated. \n🌱 THE VENUE Karamel is a very short walk from Wood Green Tube station (Piccadilly Line). The entrance to the venue is step-free and there is a wheelchair-accessible toilet. Karamel is dog-friendly\, so feel free to bring your furry friends if they’ll enjoy it. \nOriginally founded and run by vegan activists\, today it’s operated by Collage Arts (a charity supporting the local community) and managed by the lovely Kath who\, together with her charming husband Roger\, also prepares the delicious homemade food served there… in very generous portions 😉 and at fairly affordable prices! \nFor well over a decade now\, Karamel has been at the heart of London’s vegan community\, helping it reach its current size – for example: \ngiving a new home to London Vegan Drinks (Europe’s largest vegan social gathering at the time!) when it outgrew its preceding venues providing a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ vegans (inclusivity and safeguarding having always been a central tenet of theirs) with Fat Gay Vegan’s Queer Vegan Disco throwing official or de facto afterparties for many Animal Rights marches and protests Nowadays\, they host our sister event\, the regular board game event Geekstraveganza (as they’ve done since its inception in 2016)\, and a lot of other wonderful events for the local area and the wider London vegan community.
