DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that bassist Dave Whitford and trio will be performing tonight. \nLine-up: Rick Simpson (piano)\, Dave Whitford (bass)\, Tim Giles (drums). \nDave Whitford is one of the leading bassists of his generation and has worked with many of the top names in the music world including: Bill Frisell\, Maceo Parker\, Steve Lacy\, John Taylor\, Evan Parker\, Kirk Lightsey\, Ed Thigpen\, Billy Hart and Kenny Wheeler to name a few. As a youngster in Cornwall he very soon became involved in the award winning Cornwall Youth Jazz Orchestra and found himself working in numerous professional situations including music theatre\, swing\, funk and reggae bands. In 1993 Dave moved to London to study music at Middlesex University where he began playing the double bass\, he received a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music gaining a Jazz postgraduate diploma; he also received an award from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation which enabled him to tour and record with the collective quartet Neverland. Dave’s current projects include The Christine Tobin Band\, the Liam Noble Trio and The Josephine Davies Quintet. No boundaries – No limits. \nJONATHAN MAYER (sitar) son of the legendary early pioneer of India-Jazz John Mayer\, is joined by the “world class ingenuity” (The Guardian) of ALCYONA MICK on Piano and NINA HARRIES on Bass\, to explores the free fall limitations of South Asian Classical improvisation. \nFree Flow Classikal is a new concept that border dwells frontiers of indo-jazz and free impro – in development at Karamel\, home of zerOclassikal\, and one of north London’s premiere jazz venues. \nJonathan Mayer – son of the late Kolkata composer John Mayer – is a renowned sitarist & composer\, who has composed extensively for many genres including jazz\, Indian\, dance & symphonic writing and has performed all over the world\, and two very successful tours in India. \nJonathan began his musical training at just 5 years old\, learning violin from his grandfather Albert Hepton\, piano from James Methuen-Campbell and composition from his father\, and later mastered the sitar. His ability to read Western notation has allowed him to perform in a variety of genres – playing with artists such as Orlando Consort\, The London Philharmonic Orchestra and BBC Concert Orchestra\, among other notable names. \nNina Harries is a Grammy-nominated double bassist and vocalist. They trained in Western classical music at the Royal College of Music\, then moved into Indian Classical through performing for Akram Khan and Anoushka Shankar. A songwriter and ensemble artist\, Nina has performed in 28 countries to date\, and has released 2 records in 2019 and 2022. \nAlcyona Mick is a busy London-based jazz pianist and composer. She was recently nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz Instrumentalist award and has performed internationally for many years. As well as co-leading a duo with saxophonist Tori Freestone\, Alcyona currently works with a wide array of artists and bands including the London Jazz Orchestra\, Natacha Atlas\, Randolph Matthews\, Brigitte Beraha Lucid Dreamers\, Perfect Stranger\, Josephine Davies Enso ensemble and Orenda trio\, Miguel Gorodi Qtet\, Casimir Connection\, Martin Speake duo\, Kate Shortt\, Paul Clarvis/Stuart Hall trio and many others. \nAs a composer\, she has worked in the commercial field writing music for documentaries\, short films and TV and also performed live to a silent film and a music TV series in Istanbul. \n‘Alcyona Mick is an unusual powerhouse of a talent’ – MOJO \nKaramel is at 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ and offers 100% vegan food. \nDoors open at 7pm\, music starts at 8pm.
