SUMMARY:Tony Woods project
DESCRIPTION:Photocredit: Robert Goodhew \nFormed in the mid-90s\, the Tony Woods Project has recorded four highly-acclaimed albums of original folk/jazz/rock/world-inspired compositions: High Seas (1997)\, Lowlands (2004)\, Wind Shadows (2009) and Hidden Fires (2017). \nWhilst happily shifting gear between jigs and reels\, Balkan dances\, atmospheric ballads and ambient electronics\, Tony Woods’ jazz connections also play their part in his compositions\, where Latin\, African\, funk and rock grooves come to the fore. The emphasis\, both in the compositions and the improvisations\, is always on lyrical melody. \nThe highly distinctive sound of this long-standing band\, comes courtesy of Rob Millett’s glowing\, Gary Burton-esque vibraphone\, Mike Outram’s superlative\, angular chord work\, Andy Hamill’s rock-steady bass\, Milo Fell’s percussive prowess\, as well as the leader’s inimitable\, virtuosic and expressive musical story-telling on saxophones\, alto clarinet\, wood flute and whistle. \nThe Tony Woods Project will feature music from the latest album\, as well as new tunes from the next and some of their well-loved favourites. \n★★★★ (the Guardian) ★★★★ (Jazzwise) ★★★★ (The Jazzmann) ★★★★ (Jazz Journal) \n“Emotional and warmly personal music” (the Guardian) \n“powerful and affecting music.” (Chris Parker) \n“Combines a jazz edge with the melodic zest of folk…delightful.” (BBC Radio 3) \n“colourful\, evocative music from one of the most distinctive groups on the UK Jazz scene.” (The JazzMann) \n“Definitely jazz for the 21st century” (Jazz Journal) \n“Woods is phenomenal” (BBC Music Magazine) \n“European sensibility and American grooves united.” (JazzUK) \nDoors open at 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. Please book a ticket in advance. \nVENUE: MAAD (fka Karamel)\, 4 Coburg Rd\, Wood Green\, London N22 6UJ \nThe premises has a fresh air ventilation system installed throughout the restaurant and theatre. SUMMARY:Still Waters
DESCRIPTION:Collage Arts are pleased to announce that Henry Lowther will be performing with his band\, Still Waters. \nLine up: Pete Hurt\, Barry Green\, Dave Green\, Paul Clarvis and Henry Lowther. \nHenry Lowther says: “Still Waters was born out a long association and friendship going back 40 years between myself and Britain’s premiere bassist Dave Green. We both felt that the time had arrived to play music of our choice together with some of the finest jazz musicians working in Britain today. As a result Still Waters is now one of the most accomplished and creative bands around. \nAlthough a classic quintet of two front line and rhythm\, Still Waters plays radical and original music\, ranging from gentle\, quietly pastoral and melodic music\, reflecting the band’s name\, through to dynamic\, free improvisation. \nI am immensely proud of the band. The main thing to say about it is that it is a BAND and not just a collection of individual musicians; in other words the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The level of creativity\, adventure and interplay on gigs never ceases to astonish me; no two gigs are ever the same and this is truer of Still Waters than of any other band I’ve ever played in. \nDave Green\, is without doubt the foundation of Still Waters. He has a way of finding the right thing to do at exactly the right time. Whatever else goes on around him he always keeps it right there\, allowing everybody else maximum freedom. \nPaul Clarvis is the most idiosyncratic\, original and creative drummer in British jazz who\, together with pianist Barry Green’s ability to move from straight ahead playing to wayward free improvisation\, makes the rhythm section an absolute joy. I love its ability to go anywhere it chooses to go. \nMy partner on the front line\, Pete Hurt\, is not only a wonderful and inventive saxophone player but also an all round accomplished master musician and one of Britain’s very greatest composers of music for big band. \nDoors open at 7pm\, and music starts at 8pm (2 sets with a short interval). \nPlease book a ticket in advance. A limited number of seats are available due to current social distancing restrictions. If these are lifted on 21st June\, more tickets will be released in that week. \nPlease note: Karamel is now run by MAAD. Fresh air ventilation system in place. \nDoors at 7 Music at 8 \nHope to see you there!
