SUMMARY:Tomorrow’s Warriors presents JAM String Collective
DESCRIPTION:Tomorrow’s Warriors presents JAM String Collective. A Contemporary Jazz String trio playing original compositions and arrangements featuring Julia Dos Reis (viola)\, Annalise Lam (violin)\, and Miranda Lewis-Brown (cello). \n  \nThe trio plays their own re-imaginings of works by jazz heavy weights\, such as Ornette Coleman\, Thelonious Monk\, and Kenny Wheeler\, as well as their own compositions. The arrangements leave lots of space for moments of freeness\, with a heavy focus on interaction and improvisation. \nJulia and Miranda met in 2015 through Gary Crosby’s (OBE) Tomorrow’s Warriors Jazz String project\, StringTing\, with whom they have gigged extensively across the UK and Europe. They have toured with larger Warrior ensembles such as Peter Edward’s NuCivilisation Orchestra\, and Jazz Jamaica\, as well as played their own gigs – as a trio and quartet – in venues such as Ronnie Scott’s\, Pizza Express Club Soho\, The Purcell Room SBC. In 2019 they supported legendary saxophonist\, Steve Williamson\, in a UK tour. \nIn more recent years Annalise also joined the larger collective of StringTing\, first meeting Julia at a Warrior’s workshop led by jazz violinist extraordinaire\, Benet McClean. Julia and Annalise struck up a relationship which continued through their Masters studies at Guildhall\, where they would often meet to jam ideas\, many of which have continued into JAM. The JAM String Collective brings the trio together in a new project\, based in London and Bristol. In 2022 they released a live performance of Kenny Wheeler’s classic Kind Folk. Treating the group as a collective\, they have plans to involve other instrumentalists and performers for future projects. \n  \n  \nDoors open at 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. Please book a ticket in advance. \nVENUE: MAAD (fka Karamel)\, 4 Coburg Rd\, Wood Green\, London N22 6UJ \nThe premises has a fresh air ventilation system installed throughout the restaurant and theatre. SUMMARY:Collage Kids: John Row storytelling
DESCRIPTION:John Row\, is a veteran storyteller of the U.K. festival scene and a familiar figure at Glastonbury Festival Kidz Field and Cambridge Folk Festival\, where he has been performing for nearly thirty years. \n\nHe cut his teeth as a stage performer at the Ipswich Arts Theatre on free Monday night shows where his late wife Rose\, was a theatre electrician and with Nick Toczeck in the poetry and music review Stereo Graffiti in the 70’s and as an open air performer in the East Anglian  Albion Fairs in the 80’s. He added storytelling to his bow as the eighties drew to a close and was immediately drawn into a world of magic and wonder. He has shared that world in a mish mash of settings from prisons ( he was the first storyteller in residence in a British prison) to international schools across the world. His annual visits to Vienna in the first  decade of this century saw him tell stories to thousands of Kindergarten children as they struggled to come to grips with English as an additional language. A crowd at the Algiers Book Fair listened\, enthralled\, to him speaking in what was for some their fourth language and he has become a favourite in the schools near Colibita in Transylvania where he has a house he uses as a writing retreat\nHe has told stories from Indonesia\, Malaysia and Brunei in the east to Lapland in the north\, Shajah in the middle east\, Texas\, North Africa and across Europe. \nRecently he has been collecting stories in Romania\, leading an oral storytelling project in prisons\, performing in schools and pootling from festival to festival.\nNow isolated like many across the world as this virus spreads he is travelling the virtual highway of the world wide web to keep on sharing stories and as always encouraging others to do the same. \nCheck out his book of traditional tales from around the globe ‘Out of The Hat’. \n\n

SUMMARY:Private View of new exhibition ‘We Will Enjoy Flowers Again’ by Alina Potemska.
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to the Private Viewing of the exhibition ” We Will Enjoy Flowers Again” by Alina Potemska at the Karamel Gallery (MAAD\, 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ). \nWhen: Wednesday 12 October\, 6-8pm. \nRSVP via Eventbrite. \nArtist statement: \nI went to Ukraine just for three days during Easter to see my brother. I will never forget that fear while hearing an air siren and dealing with the silent public agreement to be killed any day. Even though it was a relatively safe place. This experience is extremely scary and damaging. Most people won’t share their real experiences and they should not\, they need time to pass thought to heal wounds\, to find stability. They need to get used to not being scared of a clap\, plane sound\, or any other unexpected loud sound. \nUkrainians want to cherish life\, enjoy flowers\, sing songs and draw. And we will. We just need time. To love. To win. And maybe a tiny bit of support. \n  \n08.03.22 “I wish you to enjoy flowers again!” \n  \nMy brother wished it to my mum and me on International Women’s Day. Usually\, he buys us flowers and nice presents on this day. Now we are all miles apart\, not even able either to buy flowers\, neither to receive them nor even think about presents. The idea of enjoying beauty felt inappropriate that day. The only thing we were focusing on was surviving… \nArt heals. Art helps to talk and share. I’ve always been the one who carried a small sketchbook with a pen. Now it is turning into a digital version\, but the concept remains: observe\, feel\, document. \n\nOn the 24th of February\, life changed significantly. Even being safe myself\, I stopped doing everything I used to. I already experienced that feeling during the Revolution of Dignity in 2013/14\, the annexation of Crimea the same year\, and the long-lasting war since then in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. \nThis strange feeling of responsibility to synchronise your whole life with political changes in your country. Being settled in London for a few years hasn’t separated me from the same feeling about my home country. Art saved me again. An emotional rollercoaster that pushed all anxiety feelings to the limit had to be balanced in some way. The inhumane behaviour of occupiers\, contrasting sacrificing of Ukrainian heroes more honourable than any Marvel movie ever seen\, constant worry about friends and family… I just kept drawing… \n  \n– Dr Alina Potemska – visual artist and illustrator\, board game designer\, Doctor of Arts. \n  \nArtist’s Bio \n  \nAlina Potemska was born in Kyiv and graduated from The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. She specialises in visual arts and games. She designs board games and researches effective methods of using games as an educative and healing tool. She considers game as art medium providing fundamental help in understanding the world. Usually she captures daily scenes through drawings and illustrations. After a full-scale invasion in her home country\, she focused on illustration as a way to spread the word of stories from her land. She has exhibited in solo and group shows in many countries\, including the UK\, USA\, France\, Poland\, and Ukraine\, introducing the different sides and similarities in illustration and games. \n  \nwww.potemska.com instagram.com/akilina.po behance.net/potemska \n  \nThe exhibition is on display from 27 September to 29 October 2022 at the Karamel Gallery\, Opening times: Wed-Sat 12-8pm. SUMMARY:Chris Laurence Quartet
DESCRIPTION:A chance to hear one of the most accomplished British bands spanning two generations – the 1960’s new music era represented by Chris Laurence and Frank Ricotti and the Loose Tubes era of the 1980’s represented by Martin France and John Paricelli. They will be playing music from their second recording released in 2020; tunes that have been honed over the decades and are full of all the good things of life: warmth\, humour\, melancholy\, and memories. \nLaurence’s group is notable for the acclaim each member has in Britain. In their debut CD ‘New View’ whether it’s the clean electric tone of his work on “Falling Grace\,” the distorted edge of his own buoyant 5/4 “Scrim” or his classical guitar work on Wheeler’s melancholy ballad “Where Do We Go From Here?” \nJohn Parricelli is a musical chameleon who paradoxically retains his personality. Like John Parricelli\, Frank Ricotti is a player who leans towards spare interpretation\, abstract colouration and a lyrical approach to soloing. Laurence is clearly a democratic leader\, but what he brings to this band\, in addition to an astute choice of band mates and material\, is a homage to the great British jazz standards. \nBassist Chris Laurence has been a fixture on the British scene for many years\, working regularly in the jazz sphere with artists including reedman John Surman\, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and pianist John Taylor. He’s recorded pop sessions with the likes of Elvis Costello\, Sting and David Gilmour\, and remains active in the classical community\, playing on orchestral film soundtracks including The Constant Gardener and The Man in the Iron Mask. \nLine Up: Chris Laurence – double bass\, John Parricelli – guitar\, Frank Ricotti – vibraphone and Martin France – drums \nVideo Link \nDoors open at 7pm\, and music starts at 8pm. \nTickets £10 \nVenue: MAAD (fka Karamel)\, 4 Coburg Rd\, Wood Green\, London N22 6UJ \nThe premises has a fresh air ventilation system installed throughout the restaurant and theatre.

SUMMARY:Henry Lowther’s Still Waters
DESCRIPTION:Collage presents Henry Lowther’s Still Waters. \nLine-up: Henry Lowther (trumpet/flugelhorn) \nPete Hurt (tenor sax) \nLiam Dunachie (piano) \nDave Green (bass) \nPaul Clarvis (drums) \nHenry Lowther says: “Still Waters was born out a long association and friendship going back 40 years between myself and Britain’s premiere bassist Dave Green. We both felt that the time had arrived to play music of our choice together with some of the finest jazz musicians working in Britain today. As a result Still Waters is now one of the most accomplished and creative bands around. \nAlthough a classic quintet of two front line and rhythm\, Still Waters plays radical and original music\, ranging from gentle\, quietly pastoral and melodic music\, reflecting the band’s name\, through to dynamic\, free improvisation. \nI am immensely proud of the band. The main thing to say about it is that it is a BAND and not just a collection of individual musicians; in other words the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The level of creativity\, adventure and interplay on gigs never ceases to astonish me; no two gigs are ever the same and this is truer of Still Waters than of any other band I’ve ever played in. \nDave Green\, is without doubt the foundation of Still Waters. He has a way of finding the right thing to do at exactly the right time. Whatever else goes on around him he always keeps it right there\, allowing everybody else maximum freedom. \nPaul Clarvis is the most idiosyncratic\, original and creative drummer in British jazz who\, together with pianist Barry Green’s ability to move from straight ahead playing to wayward free improvisation\, makes the rhythm section an absolute joy. I love its ability to go anywhere it chooses to go. \nMy partner on the front line\, Pete Hurt\, is not only a wonderful and inventive saxophone player but also an all round accomplished master musician and one of Britain’s very greatest composers of music for big band. \nDoors open at 7pm\, and music starts at 8pm. \nPlease book a ticket in advance to avoid disappointment. \nThe venue has a full fresh air ventilation system installed. \nPresented by Collage Arts

SUMMARY:Germana Stella La Sorsa
DESCRIPTION:*Image ©Carl Hyde Studio* \n**Germana Stella La Sorsa** \nLINE-UP:\nGermana Stella La Sorsa – Voice \nSam Leak – Hammond Organ \nTom Ollendorff – Guitar \nFlavio Li Vigni – Drum \nABOUT\nBringing the music from her debut album ‘Vapour’ as well as some of the classic and the contemporary tunes that first inspired her to write her own music\, Italian Jazz Singer and Storyteller Germana Stella La Sorsa has set out to break down both aesthetic and musical jazz conventions in a melting pot of styles. \nAfter relocating from Puglia to London\, Germana’s unique talent was quickly recognised leading to performances at some of the most prestigious London jazz venues. The move to London inspired La Sorsa to compose new material and this creative impetus eventually led to the composition of much of the music on her debut album ‘Vapour’. \nIn its style and conception\, the music is very eclectic\, crossing the boundaries of genre but steeped in modern sounds with a nod to the avant-garde. Recorded with a Hammond Trio\, Germana has channeled a wide range of influences into a contemporary jazz album that includes the music of Frank Zappa and Hermeto Pascoal. \nThe tunes are full of heavy grooves and rich in electrifying moments with captivating melodies enhanced by Germana’s distinctive instrumental use of her voice\, coloured with effects and harmonies. \nGermana’s quartet have created a modern\, open and sophisticated album\, fully tuned in to the current wave of contemporary UK jazz.\n*\n“Once in a while you hear a musician that stops you in your tracks and you can’t ignore. Upon hearing Germana La Sorsa for the first time a few years ago I was blown away by her individual and unique style of singing\, I was lucky enough to hear her live\, my first thoughts were that she sings with a beautifully clear and warm tone with shades of the Brazilian iconic vocalist Flora Purim.” Tony Kofi* \n*“The music is stimulating but never banal\, the space between improvisation and written parts is fresh\, seamless and the interplay between the musicians is perfectly balanced.” Simone Gubbiotti\, Jazz in Europe\n*\n*“…a beautifully inventive and explorative work. Germana’s light and graceful vocals weaving in and out throughout as\nshe skilfully interacts with the musicians.”\nMala Waldron\n*\n*“Ethereal vocals and captivating compositions complemented by a great band.”\nJoy Ellis* \nDoors open at 7pm\, and music starts at 8pm. \nPlease book a ticket in advance.

SUMMARY:Tony Woods project
DESCRIPTION:Photocredit: Robert Goodhew \nFormed in the mid-90s\, the Tony Woods Project has recorded four highly-acclaimed albums of original folk/jazz/rock/world-inspired compositions: High Seas (1997)\, Lowlands (2004)\, Wind Shadows (2009) and Hidden Fires (2017). \nWhilst happily shifting gear between jigs and reels\, Balkan dances\, atmospheric ballads and ambient electronics\, Tony Woods’ jazz connections also play their part in his compositions\, where Latin\, African\, funk and rock grooves come to the fore. The emphasis\, both in the compositions and the improvisations\, is always on lyrical melody. \nThe highly distinctive sound of this long-standing band\, comes courtesy of Rob Millett’s glowing\, Gary Burton-esque vibraphone\, Mike Outram’s superlative\, angular chord work\, Andy Hamill’s rock-steady bass\, Milo Fell’s percussive prowess\, as well as the leader’s inimitable\, virtuosic and expressive musical story-telling on saxophones\, alto clarinet\, wood flute and whistle. \nThe Tony Woods Project will feature music from the latest album\, as well as new tunes from the next and some of their well-loved favourites. \n★★★★ (the Guardian) ★★★★ (Jazzwise) ★★★★ (The Jazzmann) ★★★★ (Jazz Journal) \n“Emotional and warmly personal music” (the Guardian) \n“powerful and affecting music.” (Chris Parker) \n“Combines a jazz edge with the melodic zest of folk…delightful.” (BBC Radio 3) \n“colourful\, evocative music from one of the most distinctive groups on the UK Jazz scene.” (The JazzMann) \n“Definitely jazz for the 21st century” (Jazz Journal) \n“Woods is phenomenal” (BBC Music Magazine) \n“European sensibility and American grooves united.” (JazzUK) \nDoors open at 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. Please book a ticket in advance. \nVENUE: MAAD (fka Karamel)\, 4 Coburg Rd\, Wood Green\, London N22 6UJ \nThe premises has a fresh air ventilation system installed throughout the restaurant and theatre.
