In 1974 after I had left school at 16\, I was working in an office and saved up enough money to buy a saxophone after realising there must be more to life than filling out motor insurance claim forms and staring at the office clock hoping it would get to 5pm quickly each day. \nOrnette was an early influence and the album Live At The Golden Circle was the first I purchased (along with Bird and Diz) and the tune Dee Dee was the first I tried to learn. The saxophone I bought was a white plastic Grafton alto as I had seen a photo of Ornette with one on those early Atlantic Records albums. \nOver the years in my musical and personal development I have a returned to Ornette Coleman and Charlie Parker for further inspiration and each time discovering something new about them and deepening my connection with this music. I have had projects playing this music with like minded souls over the years. \nI am going through an Ornette period again now and have transcribed many of these wonderful melodies. In fact working out these tunes has kept me going through this challenging period in our history. This new band are all more recent collaborators and is wonderful to hear how they interpret these melodies as inspirations for improvising together and telling their own story. \nMany of Ornette’s melodies have become ‘standards’ being played by many musicians all over the world such as Lonely Woman\, Ramblin’ and Law Years but there are many undiscovered gems that are not played as often or at all by others. \nWe have 90 tunes to draw on already and the repertoire is growing. \nThis music is endless. He is one of an increasing number of trumpeters who have been heavily influenced by the melodic approach of the late great Kenny Dorham\, a figure often overlooked (and undeservedly so) in the pantheon of Jazz Trumpet Legends. As well as “K.D.”\, Steve cites Art Farmer\, Miles Davis and Woody Shaw among his favourite players\, but his style is very much his own. Trumpet great Wynton Marsalis recently said about him “Steve has his own style. He plays from the bottom to the top of the horn whilst maintaining the integrity of the chords. I can’t think of another trumpet player that can do what he does.” Legendary Jazz critic Ira Gitler had this to say ‘My question is where has Fishwick been hiding? SUMMARY:Noah Stoneman presents freestyle jazz
DESCRIPTION:Noah presents a monthly night of freestyle jazz at Karamel. \nBand line-up to follow. \nNoah Stoneman is a 22 year old pianist and composer from North London. He is currently studying at the Royal Academy of music and is adept at a wide range of musical idioms. What binds these different languages together is improvisation; an art which Noah aims to master throughout his career. He regularly performs as a sideman for some of the finest musicians across the UK from all generations. \nAs a composer\, Noah takes influence from all walks of music both contemporary and traditional. He is equally adept at subtly emotive synthesiser world-building as well as classic orchestral/chamber themes inspired by timeless predecessors. Noah’s music has been performed at music festivals and venues around the world\, including Brainchild festival\, Manchester Jazz Festival\, La Petite Halle in Paris and Somersby Festival in Lisbon. Over the last 3 years he has taken up contemporary classical composition tuition with Ruth Byrchmore and Alex Hills at the Royal Academy of Music. Noah has composed and arranged for myriad ensembles ranging from Piano Trio\, Big Band\, Improvising Octet\, String Quartet and recently had 2 original song cycles for piano and Opera Soprano performed at the RAM ‘Students Create’ festival. In 2022 Noah composed the original score for the mini series ‘Life in Love’ directed by Abel Rubinstein\, which was broadcast on ITV and went on to be shown at the BFI London Film Festival. \nIn October 2021\, Noah recorded his debut album at Livingston Studios\, London\, with his trio of Will Sach on bass and Luca Caruso on drums. DESCRIPTION:Melodic jazz with inspira3ons from around the world. \nCape Town-born pianist/composer Clouts’ South African roots have inspired a voyage of discovery that has led to him soaking up the joyful passion of Caribbean calypso\, the bluesy melodies of middle eastern praise songs\, the exuberant sway of Cuban dance music and the tuneful essence of Gospel while honouring jazz heroes including Bill Evans\, Keith Jarrett\, and Charles Lloyd. \nAs a key member of the popular London-based world jazz ensemble Zubop and its offshoot ZubopGambia\, with BBC World Music award-winner Juldeh Camara\, Clouts created a solid body of work with African roots. Loz Speyer’s music for Inner Space comes with references from deep within the jazz tradition – swing\, bebop\, free jazz and all the way back to New Orleans – arranged in such a way as to give the group space to explore new areas and discover where the music might GO. Each piece evolves its own unique form\, feeling and direction\, five highly distinctive musicians working it all out in the here and NOW. \nInner Space has been touring over the last year with fresh sounds in the saxophone section\, building on a band sound developed through some years of touring and recording\, with bassist Olie Brice and drummer Gary Willcox. On this night at Karamel\, Inner Space features the amazing Dee Byrne on alto sax – and as a special guest\, the wonderful Josephine Davies on tenor sax. Josephine was Jazz instrumentalist of the Year in the 2019 Parliamentary Jazz awards and leads her own big band and the trio Satori. \nAlong with music from the album “Life on the Edge” (Leo Records 2017)\, Inner Space explores some extended forms in the shape of a growing set of Jazz Portrait compositions – with titles such as “Innate Ornette”\, “Chimes for Grimes” and “Sun the One Ra the Far!” It may seems audacious to attempt to characterise in music such seminal and inspirational figures? – but it comes naturally enough from the musicians’ own lifelong relationship with their music\, as a way to make sense of that legacy in our own TIME. DESCRIPTION:Adriano Balducci Moncada from the Moncada Trio is a London based guitarist and composer with a degree in Popular Music from BIMM London in 2018 and a Master in Jazz at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in 2021. DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce the third gig in the Noah Stoneman residency at Karamel. A monthly gig of emerging & established jazz artists\, musicians and composers\, curated by Noah. \nBand line-up: *Noah Stoneman (piano)\, Christos Stylianides (trumpet)\, Miles Mindlin (guitar)\, Ruta Sipola (flute)\, Dominic Ingham (violin)\, Caius Williams (Double bass). * \nNoah Stoneman\, 21-year old pianist and composer from North London\, is studying at the Royal Academy of Music. Adept in a wide range of musical idioms\, Noah says: “What binds these different languages together is improvisation” – an art which Noah aims to master throughout his career. \nHe regularly performs as a sideman for some of the finest musicians across the UK from all generations\, including Jim Mullen\, Mark Kavuma\, Xhosa Cole\, Alex Hitchcock and also leads his own trio\, for which he composes and performs his original music. \nAs a composer\, Noah takes influence from all walks of music\, both contemporary and traditional. Noah has composed and arranged for a myriad of ensembles ranging from Piano Trio\, Big Band\, Jazz Octet\, String Quartet and recently had an original song cycle for piano and Opera Soprano performed at the RAM ‘Students Create’ festival. In 2022 Noah composed the original score for the mini series ‘Life in Love’ directed by Abel Rubinstein\, which was broadcast on ITV. \nIn October 2021\, Noah recorded his debut album at the local Livingstone Studios\, in Haringey London\, with his trio of Will Sach on bass and Luca Caruso on drums. DESCRIPTION:*Pete Whittaker *is a jazz organist based in London\, UK. Originally a piano player\, he migrated to organ after hearing the classic 1950s &60s Jimmy Smith records. As a result of immersing himself in the sound world of Jimmy Smith\, Larry Young\, Groove Holmes\, Jack mcDuff\, Jimmy McGriff etc.\, Pete has chosen to continue his musical journey in this hard-bop\, soul jazz\, funky tradition. After some years of touring with rock bands\, Pete now focusses on jazz and is currently involved in projects with some of the UK’s leading musicians. These include Theo Travis’ Double Talk\, The Filthy Six\, John Etheridge’s Blue Spirits\, Zoe Schwarz’ Blue Commotion and others. SUMMARY:Jakub Klimiuk Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Featuring in-demand musicians\, associated with the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Trinity Laban\, Jakub Klimiuk Quintet combines modern jazz with influences from Scandinavian improvised music\, Eastern European folk and contemporary classical pieces. The resultant repertoire\, consisting of original compositions\, is a highly energetic mix of scripted forms and free improvisation\, drawing from various genres but at the same time staying deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. \nMembers of the band have performed at venues like Vortex\, 606 or Ronnie Scott’s and have individually worked with Martin Speake\, Tom Challenger\, NYJO\, Morsyca\, Donovan Haffner and Húrra among others. \nQuintet’s EP entitled „Reluctance” is a reflection on the uncertainty of current times\, a way to express intertwining feelings of hope and skepticism. DESCRIPTION:”After the release of their debut album “Snow” by his Italian collective Eazy Quartet\, Marco Punzi decided to put together his own quartet. The music is all original material\, influenced by the knowledge he acquired whilst studying The Guildhall School of Music & Drama\, where he graduated in 2018\, as well as from his own Italian heritage. DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce the second gig in the Noah Stoneman residency at Karamel. A monthly gig of emerging & established jazz artists\, musicians and composers\, curated by Noah. \nBand line-up: Noah Stoneman (piano)\, Tara Cunningham (guitar)\, Mark Sanders (drums). \nNoah Stoneman\, 21-year old pianist and composer from North London\, is studying at the Royal Academy of Music. Adept in a wide range of musical idioms\, Noah says: “What binds these different languages together is improvisation” – an art which Noah aims to master throughout his career. \nHe regularly performs as a sideman for some of the finest musicians across the UK from all generations\, including Jim Mullen\, Mark Kavuma\, Xhosa Cole\, Alex Hitchcock and also leads his own trio\, for which he composes and performs his original music. \nAs a composer\, Noah takes influence from all walks of music\, both contemporary and traditional. Noah has composed and arranged for a myriad of ensembles ranging from Piano Trio\, Big Band\, Jazz Octet\, String Quartet and recently had an original song cycle for piano and Opera Soprano performed at the RAM ‘Students Create’ festival. In 2022 Noah composed the original score for the mini series ‘Life in Love’ directed by Abel Rubinstein\, which was broadcast on ITV. \nIn October 2021\, Noah recorded his debut album at the local Livingstone Studios\, in Haringey London\, with his trio of Will Sach on bass and Luca Caruso on drums. SUMMARY:Miguel Gorodi Quartet
DESCRIPTION:‘Supremely gifted trumpet and flugelhorn player’ (Jazz FM) \nMiguel Gorodi is a London based composer\, teacher and trumpet player performing across a broad spectrum of jazz and improvised music. \nHe leads and writes for the Miguel Gorodi Nonet\, and co-leads the Gorodi/Ingamells duet ensemble and the Gorodi/Braysher Quartet. He is a member of the Barry Green Sextet\, SEED Ensemble\, the London City Big Band and the Dixie Ticklers\, as well as regularly playing for the London Jazz Orchestra. \nBorn in Spain in 1990\, Miguel also grew up in Saudi Arabia and Thailand before moving to England in 2006 upon winning a music scholarship at Wells Cathedral School in Somerset. Miguel moved to London in 2008 to study Jazz Trumpet at The Guildhall School of Music & Drama\, graduating in 2012 with a first class honours degree and a Concert Recital Diploma\, and stayed at Guildhall for a further two years as the Jazz department’s fellow. \nSince moving to London\, Miguel has become one of the city’s leading young jazz trumpet players. He was first picked up at the age of 19 by singer Ian Shaw to record his album The Abbey Road Sessions (featuring Peter Ind and Gene Calderazzo) in 2010. DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tristan Mailliot Quartet: Remembering Chick Corea \nJazz Legend\, Pianist and Composer Chick Corea\, who passed away a year ago\, has left a remarkable and unforgettable legacy. In his long career\, he recorded close to 90 albums as a bandleader or co-leader and won 23 Grammys\, and many of his compositions have become jazz standards\, marked by his dreamy but brightly illuminated harmonies and ear-grabbing melodies. \nDrummer Tristan Mailliot has assembled a quartet of top flight musicians\, including BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist Tom Ridout on sax\, who share a deep love of Chick’s music .
