SUMMARY:Noah Stoneman
DESCRIPTION:Doors open 7pm\, music from 8pm. \nNoah Stoneman is a 22 year old pianist and composer from North London. He is currently studying at the Royal Academy of music and is adept at a wide range of musical idioms. What binds these different languages together is improvisation; an art which Noah aims to master throughout his career. He regularly performs as a sideman for some of the finest musicians across the UK from all generations. \nAs a composer\, Noah takes influence from all walks of music both contemporary and traditional. He is equally adept at subtly emotive synthesiser world-building as well as classic orchestral/chamber themes inspired by timeless predecessors. Noah’s music has been performed at music festivals and venues around the world\, including Brainchild festival\, Manchester Jazz Festival\, La Petite Halle in Paris and Somersby Festival in Lisbon. Over the last 3 years he has taken up contemporary classical composition tuition with Ruth Byrchmore and Alex Hills at the Royal Academy of Music. Noah has composed and arranged for myriad ensembles ranging from Piano Trio\, Big Band\, Improvising Octet\, String Quartet and recently had 2 original song cycles for piano and Opera Soprano performed at the RAM ‘Students Create’ festival. In 2022 Noah composed the original score for the mini series ‘Life in Love’ directed by Abel Rubinstein\, which was broadcast on ITV and went on to be shown at the BFI London Film Festival. \nIn October 2021\, Noah recorded his debut album at Livingston Studios\, London\, with his trio of Will Sach on bass and Luca Caruso on drums. Comprised of all original material and produced by long-time mentor and ECM recording artist Kit Downes\, the record offers a fresh poetic statement that realises Stoneman’s compositional identity. \nNoah will be premiering brand new compositions for solo violin\, as well as a second set of solo piano. \nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ The Karamel vegan kitchen will be serving food until 9.30pm. Email karamel8775@gmail.com to book a table. \nTickets: £5 in advance from www.musicglue.com/karamel or £10 On The Door. \nDoors open 7pm\, music starts at 8pm.

SUMMARY:UNKNOWN TO KNOWN
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to see Unknown To Known return to Karamel! \nUnknown to Known offers an intimate dialogue of meandering melodies and textural grooves over resounding harmonic landscapes. At times euphoric and often dynamic\, this music is always interactive\, honest and raw. \nThe group is a culmination of four musicians each active in some of the most prominent musical forces around today including Sting\, Van Morrison\, Anoushka Shankar\, Wild Flower\, Ill Considered\, Collocutor\, Akram Khan\, Dele Sosimi\, Sarathy Korwar\, Joy Crookes\, Qwalia and more. \nOn woodwinds\, Idris Rahman and Tamar Osborn weave together the melodic fabric of this music. Their lyrical approach gracefully compliments one another\, whether they play in unison or counterpoint. At any given moment either of them might choose to change instruments as between them\, they cover the baritone and tenor saxophones\, bass and soprano clarinets\, flute and bansuri. \nJihad Darwish oscillates between the sitar\, double bass and electric bass\, providing a bridge from melodic and harmonic worlds down to earthy\, pulsating yet sensitive grooves which Yusuf Ahmed ties together on the drums and various hybrid percussion instruments. \n4 EPs have already been released via Bandcamp only. The music is intentionally only released via this sustainable platform which supports musicians. The music has also found support from DJs and platforms such as Gilles Peterson\, BBC Radio\, Nabiha Iqbal\, Max Reinhard\, Soho Radio and more. \n“Blown away. The best I can do is to keep my silence” (Play It Loud!) \n“One to excite any modern jazz head. The music they create as Unknown To Known is a whole new level of aural meditation.” (Twisted Soul) \nLineup: Idris Rahman (sax\, clarinet)\, Tamar Osborn (sax)\, Jihad Darwish (bass\, sitar)\, Yusuf Ahmed (drums). \n£5 (advance)\, £10 OTD \nDoors open 7pm\, music from 8pm. \nWe gratefully acknowledge the PRS Foundation in supporting this event at Karamel. \nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ The Karamel vegan kitchen will be serving food until 9.30pm. SUMMARY:Henry Lowther - Still Waters
DESCRIPTION:Doors open 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. \nLine Up: Henry Lowther (trumpet)\, Pete Hurt (tenor sax)\, Alcyona Mick (piano)\, Dave Green (bass)\,\nPaul Clarvis (drums). \nHenry Lowther’s Still Waters was born out a long association and friendship\, going back forty years\, between Henry and bassist Dave Green. They both felt that the time had arrived to play the music of their choice\, together with some of the finest jazz musicians working in Britain today. As a result Still Waters is now one of the most accomplished\, tightly ensembled and creative bands around. \nAlthough a classic quintet of two front line and rhythm\, Still Waters plays radical and original music\, ranging from gentle\, quietly pastoral and melodic music\, reflecting the band’s name\, through to dynamic\, free improvisation. Henry Lowther was born in Leicester\, England\, in 1941. Over the last 60 years Henry’s work on the British jazz scene reads like a “Who’s Who”. He has played regularly with\, amongst many others\, Gordon Beck\, Michael Garrick\, Graham Collier\, Mike Gibbs\, Pete King\, Loose Tubes\, John Surman\, John Taylor\, Stan Tracey and Kenny Wheeler \n“Meltingly attractive solos\, startling originality.” (Chris Parker\, Vortex review).

SUMMARY:Steve Fishwick Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Doors open 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. \nLine-up: Steve Fishwick (trumpet)\, Leon Greening (piano)\, Matyas Hofecker (bass)\, Matt Home (drums). \nSteve Fishwick is widely considered to be one of the best jazz trumpet players ever to come from the UK\, and rapidly gaining a global reputation thanks to his flawless technique and his beautifully flowing\, harmonically rich improvisations. \nHe is one of an increasing number of trumpeters who have been heavily influenced by the melodic approach of the late great Kenny Dorham\, a figure often overlooked (and undeservedly so) in the pantheon of Jazz Trumpet Legends. As well as “K.D.”\, Steve cites Art Farmer\, Miles Davis and Woody Shaw among his favourite players\, but his style is very much his own. \nTrumpet great Wynton Marsalis recently said about him “Steve has his own style. He plays from the bottom to the top of the horn whilst maintaining the integrity of the chords. I can’t think of another trumpet player that can do what he does.” \nLegendary Jazz critic Ira Gitler had this to say ‘My question is where has Fishwick been hiding? Hip middle register melodious bebop\, but when Steve lights his wick he becomes a flying fish\, soaring above the waves\, totally in control!’ \nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ The Karamel vegan kitchen will be serving food until 9.30pm. SUMMARY:Perfect Stranger
DESCRIPTION:Photocredit: Drift Studios Pictured (L-to-R): Paul Michael\, Eddy White\, Shanti Jayasinha\, Jonas Golland\, Alcyona Mick\, Chris Sansom\, Tom Green\, Mick Foster\, Rob Millett\, Adam Bishop. \nDoors open 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. \nFusion? Prog? Third Stream? ... \n“PERFECT STRANGER is an extraordinary 10 piece band led by CHRIS SANSOM\, who conceived the band and the music it plays fifty years ago when he left university with a straight music education\, but a taste for the exciting stuff going on in creative rock and jazz. Unfortunately the band he formed to play his own compositions did not get off the ground\, despite attracting some key players from the progressive jazz scene of the time. Now the music is getting a public airing in the hands of a new PERFECT STRANGER band: out of the time warp emerges an exciting blend of rock\, jazz and twentieth century straight music. Don’t miss this unique and powerful band.” – Trevor Taylor\, Jazz 825 \n… from a reworking of Beethoven\, through complex changes of meter and a slow jazz waltz to a ‘perverted Turkish dance’ – with a bit of Mingus and Zappa along the way … \nPERFECT STRANGER\, a stellar 10-piece band\, will play music (mostly) written by Chris Sansom in 1974 (mostly) for his original band which included\, among others\, Chris Biscoe\, Dick Pearce\, Paul Nieman and the late\, legendary Pete Jacobsen. \nNow\, Chris is joined by Adam Bishop and Mick Foster (saxes/flutes/bass clarinet)\, George Jefford (trumpet/flugelhorn)\, Tom Green (trombone)\, Alcyona Mick (keyboards)\, Rob Millett (percussion)\, Eddy White (guitars)\, Paul Michael (bass) and Jonas Golland (drums). \nCome and experience PERFECT STRANGER’s return for a third appearance at Karamel\, in advance of the release of their debut album\, ‘Unfinished Business’\, currently in production. \nChris Sansom studied music at King’s College London in the early 1970s and has had a number of works performed over the years\, some broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Performers of his music have included the Arditti String Quartet\, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and the two Swedish giants of the classical brass world\, Håkan Hardenberger and Christian Lindberg. In 1989\, Hardenberger and Lindberg performed Chris’s major work ‘Invisible Cities’ for trumpet\, trombone and orchestra with the BBC Philharmonic\, also on Radio 3. (‘… landscapes in which the ear can wander …’ – Paul Griffiths\, The Times; ‘… rarely short of ear-catching ideas … new realm of beauty …’ – David Fanning\, The Independent). \nHere’s a flavour of what Perfect Stranger gets up to. (Note: rehearsal quality audio!)\, beginning with a very rough recording of the 1974 band playing our signature piece\, ‘Life and Times (of a Perfect Stranger)\, part 1. \nRead more about the story of Perfect Stranger. \nRead more about Chris Sansom and his music. \nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ The Karamel vegan kitchen will be serving food until 9.30pm.
