SUMMARY:MOOD - Funky Fridays
DESCRIPTION:MOOD is a 5 member band who plays contemporary jazz\, fusion with pop sound influences. \n\n\n\n\nIntroducing MOOD band members: \nNico Frager (bass)\, Federico Di Biase (guitar/ composer)\, Jossy Russell (keyboard/ composer)\, Karlos Hall (drums) and Alexander Skinner (saxophones/ composer) comprise the jazztronica quintet MOOD.\n\n\nWe have a mutual love for boom-bap grooves and jazz-funk hooks. Mix it all up and out comes the sound of MOOD! \nStarting out as bedroom jammers in 2023\, arranging the music of their favourite fusion and soul bands\, MOOD dreamed of producing their own music and getting into the minds and hearts of music lovers. \nThey started 2024 by releasing singles After Dark\, Inspiration and Stop\, Watch and are finishing the year playing shows and building their audience. \n\n\n” ‘Stop\, Watch’ is a play on words. It’s an invitation to stop our frenetic minds and becoming aware of the everyday life experience. I wrote it as the pandemic ended. That year I spent a long time meditating and it gave me this idea for a tune.” – Federico Di Biase\n\n\n“I wrote ‘After Dark’ just before moving to London. I was just really excited about moving—looking forward to meeting new people and being part in the music scene. And I wanted to write something that reflected those feelings.” – Jossy Russell\n\n\n” ‘Inspiration’ comes out of the years I lived in South Korea. I always imagine mist gathering in the mountains and the sounds of gentle rain when I listen to this track.” – Alexander Skinner\n\n\n\nThe Karamel doors are open from 5pm. Music starts from 8pm til 10pm (inc. short interval).\n\n\nThank you for supporting your local grassroots music venue!\n\n\n\nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ. \nThe Karamel vegan kitchen will be serving food until 9.30pm. Email karamel8775@gmail.com to book a table for dining (large groups over 6). \nTickets: £5 in advance via www.musicglue.com/karamel or £10 On The Door. \nDoors open 7pm\, music starts 8pm.

SUMMARY:Jim Rattigan - Nick Costley-White Duo
DESCRIPTION:Doors open 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. \nLine-up: Jim Rattigan – french horn Nick Costly-White – guitar \n“…After I’d played with Nick in Pete Hurt’s band\, I went to a gig of his at the Vortex Club. He was in a quartet with the vibes player\, Jim Hart. It was great to hear him in that small setting\, so afterwards\, I rang him up and arranged to go to his Dalston flat for a play\, and that’s how the second album of this set – I titled it “You Must Believe In Spring” – came about in October last year. Playing tunes with Nick just felt so nice. He’s got so many tunes in his repertoire\, his own and other people’s\, but he knew all the standards.” \nRattigan and Costley-White recorded 11 tunes for ‘You Must Believe In Spring’\, from Antonio Carlos Jobim’s ‘Ligia’ to the bebop classic ‘Parker’s Mood’\, to the Michel Legrand title track\, Billy Strayhorn’s ‘Lush Life’\, the ever-haunting ‘Body and Soul’ and more. This was when Rattigan mentioned these explorations to the Three Worlds Records label\, which had released three of his earlier albums. It was yet another piece of happenstance that dropped the third piece of the jigsaw of Duos into place. (extract from Rattigan’s interview with John Fordham following 3-CD release “Duos” for London Jazz News). \nThis evening\, the music will be a mix of standards\, inspired by the work of Bob Brookmeyer and Jim Hall\, and some originals written by Jim Rattigan. \nJim Rattigan has performed all over the world both as a jazz soloist and as a band member of various groups. These include the Michael Brecker Quindectet\, the Charlie Haden / Carla Bley Liberation Music Orchestra\, the McCoy Tyner Big Band\, Django Bates’ Delightful Precipice\, the Creative Jazz Orchestra with Kenny Wheeler\, Brad Mehldau with the Britten Sinfonia. Jim has toured and recorded with Mike Gibbs and the Hans Koller band with Steve Swallow and Bill Frizzell. Mark Lockheart’s Scratch Band\, Julian Arguelles Ensemble\, BBC Big Band\, Guy Barker Big Band\, the London Sinfonietta and the NDR big band in Hamburg. Jim has worked with all the major London symphony orchestras and was a member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for 6 years. Jim has played on numerous film scores including several James Bond movies\, Lord Of The Rings\, Batman\, The Bourne Ultimatum and many more. He has also written music used for film T.V. and radio. Jim has worked with many pop artists including Shirley Bassey\, Tom Jones\, Paul McCartney\, George Michael\, Jim was recently awarded an ARAM from the Royal Academy for his contribution to music. jimrattigan.co.uk \nNick Costley-White is one of the most in demand guitarists on the UK jazz scene\, renowned for a deep understanding of the jazz tradition and repertoire\, alongside a virtuosic technique and progressive approach to improvising. Nick is lucky enough to have performed with some of the most renowned jazz musicians in the country including Stan Sulzmann\, Gareth Lockrane\, Jason Rebello\, Alex Garnett\, Mark Taylor\, Steve Fishwick and Jeff Williams and holds the guitar chair with the London Jazz Orchestra. Nick performs extensively throughout the UK as well as touring in Europe\, Australia\, China and South America. nickcostley-white.com \nhttps://youtu.be/FnUk_B9H6Rk https://youtu.be/r43a4plefLE \nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ The Karamel vegan kitchen will be serving food until 9.30pm. SUMMARY:Noah Stoneman
DESCRIPTION:Doors open 7pm\, music from 8pm. \nNoah Stoneman is a 22 year old pianist and composer from North London. He is currently studying at the Royal Academy of music and is adept at a wide range of musical idioms. What binds these different languages together is improvisation; an art which Noah aims to master throughout his career. He regularly performs as a sideman for some of the finest musicians across the UK from all generations. \nAs a composer\, Noah takes influence from all walks of music both contemporary and traditional. He is equally adept at subtly emotive synthesiser world-building as well as classic orchestral/chamber themes inspired by timeless predecessors. Noah’s music has been performed at music festivals and venues around the world\, including Brainchild festival\, Manchester Jazz Festival\, La Petite Halle in Paris and Somersby Festival in Lisbon. Over the last 3 years he has taken up contemporary classical composition tuition with Ruth Byrchmore and Alex Hills at the Royal Academy of Music. Noah has composed and arranged for myriad ensembles ranging from Piano Trio\, Big Band\, Improvising Octet\, String Quartet and recently had 2 original song cycles for piano and Opera Soprano performed at the RAM ‘Students Create’ festival. In 2022 Noah composed the original score for the mini series ‘Life in Love’ directed by Abel Rubinstein\, which was broadcast on ITV and went on to be shown at the BFI London Film Festival. \nIn October 2021\, Noah recorded his debut album at Livingston Studios\, London\, with his trio of Will Sach on bass and Luca Caruso on drums. Comprised of all original material and produced by long-time mentor and ECM recording artist Kit Downes\, the record offers a fresh poetic statement that realises Stoneman’s compositional identity. \nNoah will be premiering brand new compositions for solo violin\, as well as a second set of solo piano. \nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ The Karamel vegan kitchen will be serving food until 9.30pm. Email karamel8775@gmail.com to book a table. \nTickets: £5 in advance from www.musicglue.com/karamel or £10 On The Door. \nDoors open 7pm\, music starts at 8pm.

SUMMARY:UNKNOWN TO KNOWN
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to see Unknown To Known return to Karamel! \nUnknown to Known offers an intimate dialogue of meandering melodies and textural grooves over resounding harmonic landscapes. At times euphoric and often dynamic\, this music is always interactive\, honest and raw. \nThe group is a culmination of four musicians each active in some of the most prominent musical forces around today including Sting\, Van Morrison\, Anoushka Shankar\, Wild Flower\, Ill Considered\, Collocutor\, Akram Khan\, Dele Sosimi\, Sarathy Korwar\, Joy Crookes\, Qwalia and more. \nOn woodwinds\, Idris Rahman and Tamar Osborn weave together the melodic fabric of this music. Their lyrical approach gracefully compliments one another\, whether they play in unison or counterpoint. At any given moment either of them might choose to change instruments as between them\, they cover the baritone and tenor saxophones\, bass and soprano clarinets\, flute and bansuri. \nJihad Darwish oscillates between the sitar\, double bass and electric bass\, providing a bridge from melodic and harmonic worlds down to earthy\, pulsating yet sensitive grooves which Yusuf Ahmed ties together on the drums and various hybrid percussion instruments. \n4 EPs have already been released via Bandcamp only. The music is intentionally only released via this sustainable platform which supports musicians. The music has also found support from DJs and platforms such as Gilles Peterson\, BBC Radio\, Nabiha Iqbal\, Max Reinhard\, Soho Radio and more. \n“Blown away. The best I can do is to keep my silence” (Play It Loud!) \n“One to excite any modern jazz head. The music they create as Unknown To Known is a whole new level of aural meditation.” (Twisted Soul) \nLineup: Idris Rahman (sax\, clarinet)\, Tamar Osborn (sax)\, Jihad Darwish (bass\, sitar)\, Yusuf Ahmed (drums). \n£5 (advance)\, £10 OTD \nDoors open 7pm\, music from 8pm. \nWe gratefully acknowledge the PRS Foundation in supporting this event at Karamel. \nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ The Karamel vegan kitchen will be serving food until 9.30pm. SUMMARY:Henry Lowther - Still Waters
DESCRIPTION:Doors open 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. \nLine Up: Henry Lowther (trumpet)\, Pete Hurt (tenor sax)\, Alcyona Mick (piano)\, Dave Green (bass)\,\nPaul Clarvis (drums). \nHenry Lowther’s Still Waters was born out a long association and friendship\, going back forty years\, between Henry and bassist Dave Green. They both felt that the time had arrived to play the music of their choice\, together with some of the finest jazz musicians working in Britain today. As a result Still Waters is now one of the most accomplished\, tightly ensembled and creative bands around. \nAlthough a classic quintet of two front line and rhythm\, Still Waters plays radical and original music\, ranging from gentle\, quietly pastoral and melodic music\, reflecting the band’s name\, through to dynamic\, free improvisation. Henry Lowther was born in Leicester\, England\, in 1941. Over the last 60 years Henry’s work on the British jazz scene reads like a “Who’s Who”. He has played regularly with\, amongst many others\, Gordon Beck\, Michael Garrick\, Graham Collier\, Mike Gibbs\, Pete King\, Loose Tubes\, John Surman\, John Taylor\, Stan Tracey and Kenny Wheeler \n“Meltingly attractive solos\, startling originality.” (Chris Parker\, Vortex review).
