DESCRIPTION:CLOSING GIG OF THE EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL 2022! \nCafé Kathak – Launched last year at Café Oto\, the AKDC band brings improvisational Kathak rhythms to blend with Jazz instruments to create a new never heard before sound to Indo Jazz. \nIntricate footwork performed by the critically acclaimed kathak artist Amina Khayyam to the complex mathematical patterns of Debashish Mukherjee’s tabla\, and layered by vocals by Sohini Alam\, cello by Iain McHugh and vocalised parhants by Jane Chan. \nA critically acclaimed performer\, choreographer and dance theatre maker\, Amina Khayyam began her Kathak dance training with Alpana Sengupta in Croydon progressing to professional level with Sushmita Ghosh at The Bhavan (London) under whose guidance she made her professional debut at the Purcell Room\, Southbank. Alpana introduced Amina to performance and instilled in her a deep passion to pursue it as a career. Kathak\, one of the main genres of Indian classical dance\, is traditionally regarded to have originated from the travelling bards of North India referred as Kathakars or storytellers. These Kathakars wandered around and communicated legendary stories via music\, dance and songs quite like the early Greek theatre. The Kathakars communicate stories through rhythmic foot movements\, hand gestures\, facial expressions and eye work. \nDebasish Mukherjee is among the leading tabla players to have emerged from the great musical hub of Calcutta. He trained with the doyen of the legendary Benares gharana\, Pandit Kishan Maharaj\, as well as with his father Pandit Kanai Mukherjee and with his father’s Guru\, Pandit Nanku Maharaj\, for over two decades from 1976. A sought-after soloist and accompanist for music and dance\, Debasish has played for such luminaries as Pandit Birju Maharaj (dance)\, Ustad Rashid Khan (vocal)\, Pandit Rajan Shajan Mishra (vocal) and Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee (sitar) amongst others. An “A-grade” artist with All India Radio\, Debasish maintains a performance profile in India\, the UK and Europe. \nAs a vocalist\, Sohini Alam has worked on music for dance\, theatre\, and film. She is the lead singer of the bands Khiyo\, Lokkhi Terra and has performed internationally on stage\, radio\, and television. Sohini is trained primarily in Nazrul Sangeet but has since branched out into folk\, Rabindra Sangeet and contemporary music. While she sings mainly in Bengali\, she has also sung in English for After Art\, in English/Spanish for Lokkhi Terra and in English/Hindi for Kanjoos – The Miser\, Dick Whittington Goes Bollywood\, and Bollywood Cinderella. She sang in Tamil and Roma for a collaboration with the Mongooses Musical Playbox and in Yoruba for Lokkhi Terra’s CubAfrobeat collaboration with Dele Sosimi. \nIain McHugh is a Cellist born and trained in Scotland. Iain studied Cello at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland under Robert Irvine and Rudi De Groote and in 2013\, he joined the Roslin String quartet. Iain has performed premieres in a number of different events festivals across Scotland including: Against All Things Ending (Simon Smith); Harbour Dreams (Oliver Searle); Game (Claire McCue) at The Cottier Chamber Project; many new works in the RCS PLUG festivals; and the operas Welcome Inn (Jason Staddon) and Puddle Wonderful (Matthew Whiteside) at Sound Festival in Aberdeen. \nDoors open 5pm\, performance from 6pm. DESCRIPTION:PART OF EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL 2022! \nVeteran singer/songwriter/keyboardist Charlie Wood takes you on a live listening tour through the rich musical history of his hometown\, performing songs by WC Handy\, BB King\, Otis Redding and many more\, bringing the spirit of Memphis to Wood Green’s McQueens Theatre. \nCharlie Wood is a singer/songwriter and keyboardist whose work incorporates elements of jazz\, blues\, traditional r&b and popular music. Born and raised in Memphis\, Tennessee\, Charlie toured the world with legendary bluesman Albert King and played a nightly residency on Beale Street for over 15 years. Wood was honoured by the Memphis City Council with an official Charlie Wood Day and was awarded a Brass Note on Beale Street\, the Memphis equivalent of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. \nCharlie headed down the Mississippi to New Orleans at seventeen\, spending a few formative years soaking up the music and culture of the Big Easy and playing keys with local favourites like Charmaine Neville. He returned to Memphis in his early twenties to join the band of legendary blues guitarist Albert King\, with whom he toured the US and Europe. \nHaving established a musical reputation for himself\, Charlie took up a long-standing residency with his Hammond organ trio at King’s Palace on Beale Street. The gig became known to touring musicians and locals alike\, attracting impromptu sit-ins from B.B. King\, Georgie Fame\, Joey DeFrancesco\, George Coleman\, Mulgrew Miller\, Alvin Batiste\, and many others. \nIn October 2014\, Wood became the 136th recipient of a Brass Note on Beale Street\, the Memphis equivalent of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Other recipients include such musical luminaries as Elvis Presley\, Al Green\, and Isaac Hayes. Wood is an accomplished and prolific singer/songwriter with numerous original releases under his belt\, including “Southbound” and “Who I Am” on Ben Sidran’s GoJazz label and “Flutter and Wow” on Memphis-based Archer Records. His original song “Promised Land” won the 2016 U.S.A Songwriting Competition\, Jazz category. Now living in the UK with his wife\, celebrated UK vocalist Jacqui Dankworth\, Charlie continues touring and recording regularly. Notable performances have included the London Jazz Festival’s “Jazz Voice” at the Royal Festival Hall\, BBC Radio 2’s “Friday Night Is Music Night” at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival\, Radio 2’s “Jools Holland Show\,” and numerous other concerts throughout the UK and Europe. \nWood’s seventh studio album\, a mixture of new originals and classic soul/blues/r&b songs entitled “Tomorrow Night”\, was released in November 2018. Described by The Observer as “One of the tiny handful of undeniably perfect jazz musicians”\, he remains as brilliant and inimitable as ever. \nWith organist Pete Whittaker\, formerly of The Nigel Price Organ Trio\, and drummer George Double who has worked as sideman to Shirley Bassey and Jack Jones\, Themen has formed a new trio. Their album “Thane & The Villeins” is a collection of groove-led re-imaginings of quirky curiosities from the jazz canon\, acting as a perfect vehicle for the twinkly mischief of this genuine grandee of British jazz. \n*Art Themen (Saxophone). * Born in Lancashire in November 1939\, Art played clarinet at school and in 1958 went to Cambridge University to study medicine where he played in the University jazz group. He moved to London in1961 to study at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School and began to play on the London scene with Dave Gelly\, Alexis Korner and Graham Bond. He successfully combined his medical career as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with being a popular jazz musician. He began working with Stan Tracey in 1974 and continued with various Tracey groups until 1995. He was now playing soprano sax and sopranino sax as well as the more usual tenor sax. \nHe started to work with Michael Garrick in the 1960s and continued to work with Michael Garrick’s Sextet and with Don Weller during his long association with Stan Tracey. He has also accompanied many visiting US musicians including Al Haig\, Red Rodney and Billy Mitchell and worked with Nat Adderley. With various groups he has toured extensively including India\, the Middle East\, Greece\, South America\, Switzerland\, Indonesia and played at many festivals. He has a quirky\, very original style of playing. \nHe led own quintet or quartet from 1996 and co-led a band with Alan Barnes and he has continued to freelance into the early 2000s with Georgie Fame and Don Weller amongst others. He now leads the trio ‘Thane & The Villeins’ with Pete Whittaker & George Double. \n*Pete Whittaker (Organ). * Hammond Organist Pete Whittaker studied music at the University of East Anglia\, gaining a masters degree in electroacoustic composition. Having harboured since his mid-teens a subconscious love of jazz\, Pete became very much into the genre while at college. Jazz piano in due course gave way to the discovery of that force-of-nature known to the world as the organist Jimmy Smith\, the single most important jazz Hammond innovator ever. The sound of those old Blue Note and Verve albums from the 1950s and 60s grabbed Pete by his charity-shop lapels and made him determined to recreate the sounds for himself. \nPete was fortunate to gain wider experience and exposure in the 1990s by touring with a couple of high-profile rock bands. The first of these was an Indie-ish melodic rock band (with a distinct folk-music influence) called The Wonder Stuff. Pete toured UK\, Europe and North America with them (on and off)from 1991 to their initial disintegration in 1994. \nSince moving to London in the late 1990s\, Pete has had his backside kicked (musically and literally) by many fine jazz musicians. He will be eternally grateful to them all\, and strives to learn from their talent and his own mistakes. \n*George Double (Drums). * George’s playing and recording credits include Dame Shirley Bassey\, Grammy Award Winner Jack Jones\, Marc Almond\, Mica Paris\, Ruthie Henshall and Kym Mazelle. His West End and touring theatre record includes stints on Wicked\, Guys and Dolls\, Avenue Q\, Sinatra and Anything Goes. \nHe is active on the British jazz scene and appears regularly at Ronnie Scott’s club in London and elsewhere as a freelancer (with Chris Ingham\, John Etheridge\, Art Themen\, Digby Fairweather\, Derek Nash and many others). He is also curator of Hadleigh and Southwold Jazz Clubs. \nGeorge is a senior drum kit consultant for Trinity College London. His books and arrangements are published by Trinity and Faber Music\, for whom he has run seminars and workshops in Hong Kong\, Singapore\, Malaysia\, Dubai and Abu Dhabi as well as at MusikMesse Frankfurt\, the London Drum Show and around the UK. Performers of his music have included the Arditti String Quartet\, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and the two Swedish giants of the classical brass world\, Håkan Hardenberger and Christian Lindberg. Having studied Jazz at University\, he went on to develop through the Indian classical tradition studying under UK renowned sitarist Dharambir Singh\, Indian classical maestro Buddhadev Dasgupta and his senior disciple Prattyush Banerjee. \nHis unique and exceptionally innovative style has led to collaboration with internationally renown artists such as Shankar Mahadevan\, Bickram Ghosh\, BC Manjunath\, Shankar Tucker\, Mysore Manjunath\, Pete Lockett\, Talvin Singh\, Soumik Datta\, Sarathy Korwar\, Jyotsna Srikanth and many others. \nModarelli is the leader and co-founder of the award-winning music collective Kefaya. DESCRIPTION:Mark Lockheart is a multi-award-winning tenor sax player who first made his name working with seminal band Loose Tubes in the eighties\, and whose mastery of modern jazz has kept him at the forefront of the music ever since. Co-founder of the universally regarded “The Perfect Houseplants” Mark has toured and recorded with Django Bates\, Mike Gibbs\, Mark Anthony Turnage and his own 11 piece “Scratch Band” as well as Seb Rochford’s highly acclaimed “Polar Bear”. A former Peter Whittingham Award winner\, his album “Ellington In Anticipation” was the MOJO Album of the Year (2014) and to add further glitter to an already stellar CV he was named Jazz FM’s “Instrumentalist of the Year” (2016). Most recently Mark has completed a major jazz/orchestral work titled “Days on Earth” for jazz sextet and 30-piece orchestra\, released on Edition Records (2019). And if all that wasn’t enough he is also a highly respected educator\, writer and arranger. \nChris Batchelor is an innovative and creative trumpet player and composer based in London. As well as leading several projects\, including the avant-trad band Pigfoot\, he is also featured as a sensitive and versatile soloist in many highly regarded groups on the European jazz scene\, and is a prominent soloist and composer in the re-formed Loose Tubes. He has played alongside international stars such as Michael Brecker\, Sam Rivers\, Hermeto Pascoal\, Tim Berne and Uri Caine. DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome back Miles Mindlin who first performed at Karamel along with Noah Stoneman at the age of 16. \nLondon-based Jazz guitarist\, Miles Mindlin (now 21) has been gigging professionally since the age of 14. He has played at some of the most prominent UK and European Jazz clubs and festivals. DESCRIPTION:Tomorrow’s Warriors presents JAM String Collective. A Contemporary Jazz String trio playing original compositions and arrangements featuring Julia Dos Reis (viola)\, Annalise Lam (violin)\, and Miranda Lewis-Brown (cello). \n  \nThe trio plays their own re-imaginings of works by jazz heavy weights\, such as Ornette Coleman\, Thelonious Monk\, and Kenny Wheeler\, as well as their own compositions. The arrangements leave lots of space for moments of freeness\, with a heavy focus on interaction and improvisation. \nJulia and Miranda met in 2015 through Gary Crosby’s (OBE) Tomorrow’s Warriors Jazz String project\, StringTing\, with whom they have gigged extensively across the UK and Europe. They have toured with larger Warrior ensembles such as Peter Edward’s NuCivilisation Orchestra\, and Jazz Jamaica\, as well as played their own gigs – as a trio and quartet – in venues such as Ronnie Scott’s\, Pizza Express Club Soho\, The Purcell Room SBC. In 2019 they supported legendary saxophonist\, Steve Williamson\, in a UK tour. \nIn more recent years Annalise also joined the larger collective of StringTing\, first meeting Julia at a Warrior’s workshop led by jazz violinist extraordinaire\, Benet McClean. Julia and Annalise struck up a relationship which continued through their Masters studies at Guildhall\, where they would often meet to jam ideas\, many of which have continued into JAM. The JAM String Collective brings the trio together in a new project\, based in London and Bristol. In 2022 they released a live performance of Kenny Wheeler’s classic Kind Folk. SUMMARY:Chris Laurence Quartet
DESCRIPTION:A chance to hear one of the most accomplished British bands spanning two generations – the 1960’s new music era represented by Chris Laurence and Frank Ricotti and the Loose Tubes era of the 1980’s represented by Martin France and John Paricelli. They will be playing music from their second recording released in 2020; tunes that have been honed over the decades and are full of all the good things of life: warmth\, humour\, melancholy\, and memories. \nLaurence’s group is notable for the acclaim each member has in Britain. In their debut CD ‘New View’ whether it’s the clean electric tone of his work on “Falling Grace\,” the distorted edge of his own buoyant 5/4 “Scrim” or his classical guitar work on Wheeler’s melancholy ballad “Where Do We Go From Here?” \nJohn Parricelli is a musical chameleon who paradoxically retains his personality. Like John Parricelli\, Frank Ricotti is a player who leans towards spare interpretation\, abstract colouration and a lyrical approach to soloing. Laurence is clearly a democratic leader\, but what he brings to this band\, in addition to an astute choice of band mates and material\, is a homage to the great British jazz standards. \nBassist Chris Laurence has been a fixture on the British scene for many years\, working regularly in the jazz sphere with artists including reedman John Surman\, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and pianist John Taylor. DESCRIPTION:The Donovan Haffner Quintet is a band made up of talented young musicians playing the music they love; inspired by American Contemporary Jazz. We both felt that the time had arrived to play music of our choice together with some of the finest jazz musicians working in Britain today. As a result Still Waters is now one of the most accomplished and creative bands around. \nAlthough a classic quintet of two front line and rhythm\, Still Waters plays radical and original music\, ranging from gentle\, quietly pastoral and melodic music\, reflecting the band’s name\, through to dynamic\, free improvisation. \nI am immensely proud of the band. The main thing to say about it is that it is a BAND and not just a collection of individual musicians; in other words the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The level of creativity\, adventure and interplay on gigs never ceases to astonish me; no two gigs are ever the same and this is truer of Still Waters than of any other band I’ve ever played in. \nDave Green\, is without doubt the foundation of Still Waters. He has a way of finding the right thing to do at exactly the right time. Whatever else goes on around him he always keeps it right there\, allowing everybody else maximum freedom. \nPaul Clarvis is the most idiosyncratic\, original and creative drummer in British jazz who\, together with pianist Barry Green’s ability to move from straight ahead playing to wayward free improvisation\, makes the rhythm section an absolute joy. DESCRIPTION:Photocredit: Robert Goodhew \nFormed in the mid-90s\, the Tony Woods Project has recorded four highly-acclaimed albums of original folk/jazz/rock/world-inspired compositions: High Seas (1997)\, Lowlands (2004)\, Wind Shadows (2009) and Hidden Fires (2017). \nWhilst happily shifting gear between jigs and reels\, Balkan dances\, atmospheric ballads and ambient electronics\, Tony Woods’ jazz connections also play their part in his compositions\, where Latin\, African\, funk and rock grooves come to the fore. DESCRIPTION:Karamel presents: Tara Minton @ MAAD \nTara Minton is an Australian born harpist\, vocalist and composer. She is proudly endorsed by Camac Harps and holds a masters degree in jazz performance from The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Well established as both an improvising harpist and vocalist\, she has worked with Björk\, Tom Walker\, Miranda Mulholland\, “Kitty\, Daisy and Lewis”\, SuRie\, Stan Sulzman\, Tommaso Starace\, Tony Kofi and Geoff Gascoyne. Tara’s 2020 release “Please Do Not Ignore The Mermaid” received widespread critical acclaim\, which she consolidated with her 2022 duo album with bassist Ed Babar\, “Two For The Road”. When not sitting behind her harp\, Tara sings with “The Blues and Roots Ensemble”\, a London based nine-piece band celebrating the music of Charles Mingus and works as a session vocalist for film and television. DESCRIPTION:Maria Grapsa Quintet featuring Emma Rawicz & Becca Wilkins \nMaria Grapsa leads a quintet of young exciting musicians from the thriving UK scene and is set to release her debut studio album later this year. Her music is influenced by cinematic themes; pushing the limits of improvisation within the jazz idiom and beyond. Maria’s classical music background\, Greek origins and world\, folk\, middle-East and Latin influences\, all meet the jazz tradition in a unique way. She has performed in prestigious venues and festivals such as Southbank Centre\, Birmingham Symphony Hall\, Jazz Café\, Wilderness and Cheltenham Jazz Festival\, while has shared the stage with Gary Crosby OBE\, Daniel Rollins and Tim Berne. Maria is a Scholarship Jazz Masters alumna of Royal Conservatoire of Birmingham and a recipient of the Help Musicians Transmission Fund 2021.
