SUMMARY:Pete Whittaker-Mark Crooks Quartet
DESCRIPTION:A SPECIAL SUNDAY AFTERNOON OF JAZZ with Pete Whittaker\, jazz organist with Mark Crooks. \nLine-up: Mark Crooks – tenor sax\, Colin Oxley – guitar\, Matt Fishwick – drums\, Pete Whittaker – organ. \nPete Whittaker is a jazz organist based in London\, UK. Originally a piano player\, he migrated to organ after hearing the classic 1950s &60s Jimmy Smith records. As a result of immersing himself in the sound world of Jimmy Smith\, Larry Young\, Groove Holmes\, Jack mcDuff\, Jimmy McGriff etc.\, Pete has chosen to continue his musical journey in this hard-bop\, soul jazz\, funky tradition. After some years of touring with rock bands\, Pete now focusses on jazz and is currently involved in projects with some of the UK’s leading musicians. These include Theo Travis’ Double Talk\, The Filthy Six\, John Etheridge’s Blue Spirits\, Zoe Schwarz’ Blue Commotion and others. Despite his deep love of the vintage Hammond tonewheel consoles\, Pete has always had one eye on the digital clones\, though none have impressed him as much for authenticity as the Crumar Mojo which he now plays on the vast majority of his gigs and several recent recordings. \nDoors open 2pm\, music from 3pm. \nFree Entry. Please RSVP via ticket link. \nFrom 1pm\, the Karamel Vegan Kitchen will be open and serving food\, an offering Vegan Sunday Roast. SUMMARY:George Crotty Trio
DESCRIPTION:Doors open 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. \nBand line-up: George Crotty\, (cello)\, John Murchison (bass) \, Jeremy Smith\, (percussion) \nKnown for their expressive fluidity and modal orientation\, The George Crotty Trio engages in cross-cultural interplay within modal jazz\, Indian raga\, and Arabic maqam\, all while pushing the boundaries of the cello as a jazz instrument\, on which bandleader George Crotty has forged his own exciting vocabulary.\nFollowing his graduation from the Berklee College of Music\, Crotty immersed himself in New York’s jazz and world music scenes\, playing with several ensembles\, such as the Brooklyn Raga Massive\, and the Detroit-based National Arab Orchestra. Additionally\, he has enjoyed fruitful collaborations with Simon Shaheen\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Anat Cohen\, and Darol Anger.\nPowered by percussionist Jeremy Smith and bassist John Murchsion\, The George Crotty Trio’s sound deviates from a trio’s typical hierarchy. The three players intertwine on their own spontaneous terms in an exploration of groove and colour\, lending Crotty’s tunes an exciting three-dimensional quality. \n“Transcends the trio format.” – The WholeNote \n“A stream of genre-blurring invention.” – All About Jazz \n“Sounds like the cosmopolitan centre Toronto is.” – Canadian Music Centre \nwww .georegcrotty.com/trio www.facebook.com/georgecrottycello www.instagram.com/georgecrottycello https://georgecrotty.bandcamp.com/album/chronotope \nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ The Karamel vegan kitchen will be serving food until 9.30pm. SUMMARY:Simon Picard Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Doors open 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. \nBand Line-up: Simon Picard – tenor saxophone\, Pete Whitaker – piano\, Dave Green – bass\, Matt Holme – drums \nSimon Picard first gained acclaim in the early 1980’s with the award-winning Stinky Winkles\, but it was as the “P” in the superb trio\, R.P.M. (with Paul Rogers and Tony Marsh) that he made an older generation of musicians take notice. Tony Marsh was already a familiar face\, but the two younger men were a revelation. An expanded line-up – 7 R.P.M. – featured regularly at the Bracknell Jazz Festival\, where Simon also appeared with Trevor Watts Moire Music\, and John Stevens’ Folkus. Other ventures included membership of Barry Guy’s London Jazz Composers’ Orchestra\, and numerous projects with Elton Dean and Keith Tippett\, as well as leading his own groups. \nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ The Karamel vegan kitchen will be serving food until 9.30pm. SUMMARY:Perfect Stranger
DESCRIPTION:Photocredit: Drift Studios Pictured (L-to-R): Paul Michael\, Eddy White\, Shanti Jayasinha\, Jonas Golland\, Alcyona Mick\, Chris Sansom\, Tom Green\, Mick Foster\, Rob Millett\, Adam Bishop. \nDoors open 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. \nFusion? Prog? Third Stream? ... \n“PERFECT STRANGER is an extraordinary 10 piece band led by CHRIS SANSOM\, who conceived the band and the music it plays fifty years ago when he left university with a straight music education\, but a taste for the exciting stuff going on in creative rock and jazz. Unfortunately the band he formed to play his own compositions did not get off the ground\, despite attracting some key players from the progressive jazz scene of the time. Now the music is getting a public airing in the hands of a new PERFECT STRANGER band: out of the time warp emerges an exciting blend of rock\, jazz and twentieth century straight music. Don’t miss this unique and powerful band.” – Trevor Taylor\, Jazz 825 \n… from a reworking of Beethoven\, through complex changes of meter and a slow jazz waltz to a ‘perverted Turkish dance’ – with a bit of Mingus and Zappa along the way … \nPERFECT STRANGER\, a stellar 10-piece band\, will play music (mostly) written by Chris Sansom in 1974 (mostly) for his original band which included\, among others\, Chris Biscoe\, Dick Pearce\, Paul Nieman and the late\, legendary Pete Jacobsen. \nNow\, Chris is joined by Adam Bishop and Mick Foster (saxes/flutes/bass clarinet)\, George Jefford (trumpet/flugelhorn)\, Tom Green (trombone)\, Alcyona Mick (keyboards)\, Rob Millett (percussion)\, Eddy White (guitars)\, Paul Michael (bass) and Jonas Golland (drums). \nCome and experience PERFECT STRANGER’s return for a third appearance at Karamel\, in advance of the release of their debut album\, ‘Unfinished Business’\, currently in production. \nChris Sansom studied music at King’s College London in the early 1970s and has had a number of works performed over the years\, some broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Performers of his music have included the Arditti String Quartet\, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and the two Swedish giants of the classical brass world\, Håkan Hardenberger and Christian Lindberg. In 1989\, Hardenberger and Lindberg performed Chris’s major work ‘Invisible Cities’ for trumpet\, trombone and orchestra with the BBC Philharmonic\, also on Radio 3. (‘… landscapes in which the ear can wander …’ – Paul Griffiths\, The Times; ‘… rarely short of ear-catching ideas … new realm of beauty …’ – David Fanning\, The Independent). \nHere’s a flavour of what Perfect Stranger gets up to. (Note: rehearsal quality audio!)\, beginning with a very rough recording of the 1974 band playing our signature piece\, ‘Life and Times (of a Perfect Stranger)\, part 1. \nRead more about the story of Perfect Stranger. \nRead more about Chris Sansom and his music. \nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ The Karamel vegan kitchen will be serving food until 9.30pm.
