SUMMARY:Noah Stoneman IMPROV
DESCRIPTION:Noah presents a monthly night of Improvisational freestyle jazz at Karamel. \nBand line-up: Noah Stoneman (piano); Caius Williams (bass); Mark Sanders (drums). \nNoah Stoneman is a 22 year old pianist and composer from North London. He is currently studying at the Royal Academy of music and is adept at a wide range of musical idioms. What binds these different languages together is improvisation; an art which Noah aims to master throughout his career. He regularly performs as a sideman for some of the finest musicians across the UK from all generations. \nAs a composer\, Noah takes influence from all walks of music both contemporary and traditional. He is equally adept at subtly emotive synthesiser world-building as well as classic orchestral/chamber themes inspired by timeless predecessors. Noah’s music has been performed at music festivals and venues around the world\, including Brainchild festival\, Manchester Jazz Festival\, La Petite Halle in Paris and Somersby Festival in Lisbon. Over the last 3 years he has taken up contemporary classical composition tuition with Ruth Byrchmore and Alex Hills at the Royal Academy of Music. Noah has composed and arranged for myriad ensembles ranging from Piano Trio\, Big Band\, Improvising Octet\, String Quartet and recently had 2 original song cycles for piano and Opera Soprano performed at the RAM ‘Students Create’ festival. In 2022 Noah composed the original score for the mini series ‘Life in Love’ directed by Abel Rubinstein\, which was broadcast on ITV and went on to be shown at the BFI London Film Festival. \nIn October 2021\, Noah recorded his debut album at Livingston Studios\, London\, with his trio of Will Sach on bass and Luca Caruso on drums. Comprised of all original material and produced by long-time mentor and ECM recording artist Kit Downes\, the record offers a fresh poetic statement that realises Stoneman’s compositional identity. \n  \nDoors open 7pm\, music from 8pm. \nA pre-show menu is available from 6.30pm. If you’d like to reserve a table\, email karamel8775@gmail.com with your arrival time and group size. \nTickets £10 \nhttps://www.musicglue.com/karamel \nVENUE: 4 Coburg Rd\, Wood Green\, London N22 6UJ \nCome and join us for a delicious vegan meal and drinks\, enjoy some live jazz\, and meet new people who also love jazz!\nWe can’t wait to see you there! \n

SUMMARY:Henry Lowther’s Still Waters
DESCRIPTION:Collage presents Henry Lowther’s Still Waters. \n*Line-up: Henry Lowther (trumpet/flugelhorn) Pete Hurt (tenor sax) Barry Green (piano) Dave Green (bass) Paul Clarvis (drums) * \nHenry Lowther says: “Still Waters was born out a long association and friendship going back 40 years between myself and Britain’s premiere bassist Dave Green. We both felt that the time had arrived to play music of our choice together with some of the finest jazz musicians working in Britain today. As a result Still Waters is now one of the most accomplished and creative bands around. \nAlthough a classic quintet of two front line and rhythm\, Still Waters plays radical and original music\, ranging from gentle\, quietly pastoral and melodic music\, reflecting the band’s name\, through to dynamic\, free improvisation. \nI am immensely proud of the band. The main thing to say about it is that it is a BAND and not just a collection of individual musicians; in other words the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The level of creativity\, adventure and interplay on gigs never ceases to astonish me; no two gigs are ever the same and this is truer of Still Waters than of any other band I’ve ever played in. \nDave Green\, is without doubt the foundation of Still Waters. He has a way of finding the right thing to do at exactly the right time. Whatever else goes on around him he always keeps it right there\, allowing everybody else maximum freedom. \nPaul Clarvis is the most idiosyncratic\, original and creative drummer in British jazz who\, together with pianist Barry Green’s ability to move from straight ahead playing to wayward free improvisation\, makes the rhythm section an absolute joy. I love its ability to go anywhere it chooses to go. \nMy partner on the front line\, Pete Hurt\, is not only a wonderful and inventive saxophone player but also an all round accomplished master musician and one of Britain’s very greatest composers of music for big band. \n  \nDoors open at 7pm\, and music starts at 8pm. \nBook a ticket in advance to avoid disappointment.

SUMMARY:Betty Accorsi Quartet and Growing Roots
DESCRIPTION:Women in Jazz Media present: Betty Accorsi Quartet and Growing Roots \nAn evening to celebrate Betty Accorsi’s latest album Growing Roots released on Friday 15th July 2022 with support from the Help Musicians MOBO Grant. The quartet features acclaimed London musicians Daniel Hewson (piano)\, Andy Hamill (bass) and Scott MacDonald (drums). The album is a journey along the coastal area of Brighton\, where Betty took six pictures and wrote one song for each picture. Her songwriting will use influences as diverse as Pat Metheny\, Björk and the Great American Songbook to transport the audience right into each scene\, complemented by Betty’s flamboyant soprano improvisation\, blending Coltrane\, Garbarek and Surman. \nBetty Accorsi is an Italian saxophone player\, multi-instrumentalist and composer currently based in Brighton. She studied classical saxophone\, piano and composition at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatoire in Milan. \nIn Italy\, Betty was involved in projects spanning from contemporary music ensembles with composer Salvatore Sciarrino to the progressive rock band Psicosuono\, which released two albums (Eta Carinae\, Metropoli). \nIn 2018\, she moved to London and started a Master’s degree in Jazz Saxophone at Trinity Laban Conservatoire with a scholarship. Trinity’s academic environment includes leaders in the London jazz scene such as saxophonist Jean Toussaint and composer Bruno Heinen. Searching for a more open-ended approach to artistry and composition\, Betty moved to Goldsmiths University of London in 2019. She completed her Master’s in Performance under the guidance of Mick Foster\, Paul Bartholomew and Dr Pete Furniss\, graduating with a distinction. After completing her studies at the height of the 2020 pandemic\, Betty moved to Brighton\, where she currently teaches to students\, schools and big bands. \nBetty is part of acoustic duo called Sloth in the City\, formed in 2018 with percussive fingerstyle guitar player Andrea Martelloni. Their EP Remember Music\, recorded in 2021 in London\, is composed of originals that blend jazz forms with Celtic folk and Mediterranean music. \nBetty’s main project is the Betty Accorsi Quartet. This was founded with pianist Finn Carter and drummer Scott MacDonald; they were the finest musicians in her year at Goldsmiths and very popular in the South East of London. The quartet also features in-demand bassist Andy Hamill (Van Morrison\, Martin Taylor\, Ibrahim Maalouf). \nIn December 2020 they released The Cutty Sark Suite\, an album of original compositions that introduced the Quartet’s sound as jazz blending elegant soprano melodic lines with an intense rhythm section that is punk-like at times. The Quartet was also part of the 2021 Brighton Fringe Festival\, playing The Cutty Sark Suite in its entirety on a live-streamed gig. \nThe second album “Growing Roots” was released on the 15th July 2022 featuring pianist Daniel Hewson (Groove Armada\, Madonna\, Incognito)\, drummer Scott MacDonald and bassist Andy Hamill. Betty’s approach has evolved into a refined\, evocative\, lyrical jazz blending her many influences into a cinematic style reminiscent of Pat Metheny\, John Surman\, and Jan Garbarek. Growing Roots was funded by Help Musician’s Music Of Black Origin (MOBO) Award. \nBand Line-Up Lead – Betty Accorsi (sax and vocals) \nPiano – Daniel Hewson \nDrums – Berker Banar \nBass – Andy Hamill \nWeb links https://www.bettyaccorsi.com/ YouTube links https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYIPDdUD9KWxRcIvCWiaMUw \nPress quotes “Her compositions take you where she says the music belongs” (Simply Jazz Talk) \n“In a short space of time\, Betty Accorsi has staked her claim as a talent to listen out for (…) forging a quartet that is distinctive and able to interpret her constantly shifting compositions” (Jazz Views) \n“… simply elegant\, superbly crafted\, sumptuously melodic jazz…” (All about Jazz) \nDoors open at 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. SUMMARY:Pete Whittaker-Mark Crooks Quartet
DESCRIPTION:A SPECIAL SUNDAY AFTERNOON OF JAZZ with Pete Whittaker\, jazz organist with Mark Crooks. \nLine-up: Mark Crooks – tenor sax\, Colin Oxley – guitar\, Matt Fishwick – drums\, Pete Whittaker – organ. \nPete Whittaker is a jazz organist based in London\, UK. Originally a piano player\, he migrated to organ after hearing the classic 1950s &60s Jimmy Smith records. As a result of immersing himself in the sound world of Jimmy Smith\, Larry Young\, Groove Holmes\, Jack mcDuff\, Jimmy McGriff etc.\, Pete has chosen to continue his musical journey in this hard-bop\, soul jazz\, funky tradition. After some years of touring with rock bands\, Pete now focusses on jazz and is currently involved in projects with some of the UK’s leading musicians. These include Theo Travis’ Double Talk\, The Filthy Six\, John Etheridge’s Blue Spirits\, Zoe Schwarz’ Blue Commotion and others. Despite his deep love of the vintage Hammond tonewheel consoles\, Pete has always had one eye on the digital clones\, though none have impressed him as much for authenticity as the Crumar Mojo which he now plays on the vast majority of his gigs and several recent recordings. \nDoors open 2pm\, music from 3pm. \nFree Entry. Please RSVP via ticket link. \nFrom 1pm\, the Karamel Vegan Kitchen will be open and serving food\, an offering Vegan Sunday Roast.
