SUMMARY:Henry Lowther’s Still Waters
DESCRIPTION:Collage presents Henry Lowther’s Still Waters. \n*Line-up: Henry Lowther (trumpet/flugelhorn) Pete Hurt (tenor sax) Barry Green (piano) Dave Green (bass) Paul Clarvis (drums) * \nHenry Lowther says: “Still Waters was born out a long association and friendship going back 40 years between myself and Britain’s premiere bassist Dave Green. We both felt that the time had arrived to play music of our choice together with some of the finest jazz musicians working in Britain today. As a result Still Waters is now one of the most accomplished and creative bands around. \nAlthough a classic quintet of two front line and rhythm\, Still Waters plays radical and original music\, ranging from gentle\, quietly pastoral and melodic music\, reflecting the band’s name\, through to dynamic\, free improvisation. \nI am immensely proud of the band. The main thing to say about it is that it is a BAND and not just a collection of individual musicians; in other words the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The level of creativity\, adventure and interplay on gigs never ceases to astonish me; no two gigs are ever the same and this is truer of Still Waters than of any other band I’ve ever played in. \nDave Green\, is without doubt the foundation of Still Waters. He has a way of finding the right thing to do at exactly the right time. Whatever else goes on around him he always keeps it right there\, allowing everybody else maximum freedom. \nPaul Clarvis is the most idiosyncratic\, original and creative drummer in British jazz who\, together with pianist Barry Green’s ability to move from straight ahead playing to wayward free improvisation\, makes the rhythm section an absolute joy. I love its ability to go anywhere it chooses to go. \nMy partner on the front line\, Pete Hurt\, is not only a wonderful and inventive saxophone player but also an all round accomplished master musician and one of Britain’s very greatest composers of music for big band. \n  \nDoors open at 7pm\, and music starts at 8pm. \nBook a ticket in advance to avoid disappointment. \nA pre-show menu is available from 6.30pm. If you’d like to reserve a table\, email karamel8775@gmail.com with your arrival time and group size. \nTickets £10 \nhttps://www.musicglue.com/karamel \nVENUE: 4 Coburg Rd\, Wood Green\, London N22 6UJ \nCome and join us for a delicious vegan meal and drinks\, enjoy some live jazz\, and meet new people who also love jazz!\nWe can’t wait to see you there!

SUMMARY:In All Languages: The Music of Ornette Coleman by Martin Speake Quartet
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome award-winning saxophonist Martin Speake\, one of the most fluent and creative musicians and composers in the UK in a tribute to Ornette Coleman. \n*Band line-up: Martin Speake (alto saxophone); Alyson Cawley (tenor saxophone); James Owston (double bass); Adam Merrell (drums); * \n“A saxophonist with an unusual turn of phrase\, a persuasively gentle sound … Martin Speake is not just a distinctive improviser but a striking composer too” – John Fordham\, The Guardian \nVideo clip 1 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XegPkpHv8NE \nVideo clip 2 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odAp8l8dhwU \nMartin Speake says: “I have been drawn to Ornette’s music since I began playing alto saxophone nearly 50 years ago. In 1974 after I had left school at 16\, I was working in an office and saved up enough money to buy a saxophone after realising there must be more to life than filling out motor insurance claim forms and staring at the office clock hoping it would get to 5pm quickly each day. \nOrnette was an early influence and the album Live At The Golden Circle was the first I purchased (along with Bird and Diz) and the tune Dee Dee was the first I tried to learn. The saxophone I bought was a white plastic Grafton alto as I had seen a photo of Ornette with one on those early Atlantic Records albums. \nOver the years in my musical and personal development I have a returned to Ornette Coleman and Charlie Parker for further inspiration and each time discovering something new about them and deepening my connection with this music. I have had projects playing this music with like minded souls over the years. \nI am going through an Ornette period again now and have transcribed many of these wonderful melodies. In fact working out these tunes has kept me going through this challenging period in our history. This new band are all more recent collaborators and is wonderful to hear how they interpret these melodies as inspirations for improvising together and telling their own story. \nMany of Ornette’s melodies have become ‘standards’ being played by many musicians all over the world such as Lonely Woman\, Ramblin’ and Law Years but there are many undiscovered gems that are not played as often or at all by others. \nWe have 90 tunes to draw on already and the repertoire is growing. \nThis music is endless. Ornette is the supreme melodist.” \nDo not miss this special evening – “In All Languages” \n  \nDoors open at 7pm\, and music starts at 8pm. Please book your tickets in advance.

SUMMARY:Philip Clouts Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Melodic jazz with inspira3ons from around the world. \nCape Town-born pianist/composer Clouts’ South African roots have inspired a voyage of discovery that has led to him soaking up the joyful passion of Caribbean calypso\, the bluesy melodies of middle eastern praise songs\, the exuberant sway of Cuban dance music and the tuneful essence of Gospel while honouring jazz heroes including Bill Evans\, Keith Jarrett\, and Charles Lloyd. \nAs a key member of the popular London-based world jazz ensemble Zubop and its offshoot ZubopGambia\, with BBC World Music award-winner Juldeh Camara\, Clouts created a solid body of work with African roots. Since moving to Dorset in 2006 he has responded to his new surroundings with impressionisti compositions that complement his world music interests\, resona3ng with strong themes and packing a mighty rhythmical punch. \nThe latest CD from the Philip Clouts Quartet is one of the first waves of releases on the new jazz imprint from prestigious label Odradek Records. On this album\, titled Umoya (named from the Zulu word for life force)\, Clouts’ African inspirations extend beyond Cape jazz to Gnawa music and Afrobeat\, and further to pan-European folksong and soul-jazz. Joined by rising star saxophonist Samuel Eagles\, bassist Tim Fairhall and drummer Ted Carrasco\, he brings his musical journey alive with superb musicianship and infectious vigour. \nPRESS “The best of British jazz” Chris Phillips Jazz FM “Precise ebullience and relaxed funkiness” The Guardian “A revelatory experience” UK Vibe “Clouts’ compositions are strong and likable. The quartet’s playing is similarly engaging\, a feeling of optimism pervading the tunes with a life force of its own” All About Jazz “It has a very infectious feel-good quality about it” Jazz FM “Clouts’ affection for a gospel-powered earthiness emerges in the relaxed funkiness of his piano solo” The Guardian “Clouts’ compositions are highly melodic\, rhythmically varied\, and stylistically and culturally diverse. In this quartet\, he has musicians capable of bringing his ideas to colourful and vital fruition” Ian Mann \nLINKS Youtube Streaming Website \nSOCIAL MEDIA LINKS Twitter: @philipclouts Facebook: @philipcloutsquartet

SUMMARY:Loz Speyer's INNER SPACE
DESCRIPTION:LOZ SPEYER’S INNER SPACE Loz Speyer – trumpet\, flugelhorn; Dee Byrne – alto sax; Special guest\, Josephine Davies – tenor sax; Olie Brice – double bass; Gary Willcox – drums; \nInner Space plays Jazz of a rare warmth and immediacy – compositions for improvisers with roots in both jazz and free improv. Loz Speyer’s music for Inner Space comes with references from deep within the jazz tradition – swing\, bebop\, free jazz and all the way back to New Orleans – arranged in such a way as to give the group space to explore new areas and discover where the music might GO. Each piece evolves its own unique form\, feeling and direction\, five highly distinctive musicians working it all out in the here and NOW. \nInner Space has been touring over the last year with fresh sounds in the saxophone section\, building on a band sound developed through some years of touring and recording\, with bassist Olie Brice and drummer Gary Willcox. On this night at Karamel\, Inner Space features the amazing Dee Byrne on alto sax – and as a special guest\, the wonderful Josephine Davies on tenor sax. Josephine was Jazz instrumentalist of the Year in the 2019 Parliamentary Jazz awards and leads her own big band and the trio Satori. \nAlong with music from the album “Life on the Edge” (Leo Records 2017)\, Inner Space explores some extended forms in the shape of a growing set of Jazz Portrait compositions – with titles such as “Innate Ornette”\, “Chimes for Grimes” and “Sun the One Ra the Far!” It may seems audacious to attempt to characterise in music such seminal and inspirational figures? – but it comes naturally enough from the musicians’ own lifelong relationship with their music\, as a way to make sense of that legacy in our own TIME. The pieces inspired by actual encounters come with stories that emerge in the live situation – both musicians and audience can tap into deep sources of inspiration. \n“The integrity they bring to the emerging free jazz push-pull structure of ’Space Music’ pilots the musicians further towards destinations unknown.” – Philip Clark\, Jazzwise \n“Superb outing\, that effectively highlights the leader’s jarring and perceptively constructed compositions.” – Glen Astarita\, All About Jazz \n“Upon listening\, I was hooked…. the contrapuntal moments when the horns venture just over the edge make me think that if ODJB had arrived 100 years later they may have sounded like this.” – Lance Liddle\, Bebop Spoken Here \n\n: Sun the One Ra the Far – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGl0hctHYKU \nalbum\, Life on the Edge: https://spherical-records.bandcamp.com/album/life-on-the-edge \nDoors open 7pm\, music from 8pm. \nA pre-show menu is available from 6.30pm\, if you’d like to reserve a table\, please email karamel8775@gmail.com with your arrival time\, group size and preferred menu choices.

SUMMARY:Pete Whittaker Quartet
DESCRIPTION:*Pete Whittaker *is a jazz organist based in London\, UK. Originally a piano player\, he migrated to organ after hearing the classic 1950s &60s Jimmy Smith records. As a result of immersing himself in the sound world of Jimmy Smith\, Larry Young\, Groove Holmes\, Jack mcDuff\, Jimmy McGriff etc.\, Pete has chosen to continue his musical journey in this hard-bop\, soul jazz\, funky tradition. After some years of touring with rock bands\, Pete now focusses on jazz and is currently involved in projects with some of the UK’s leading musicians. These include Theo Travis’ Double Talk\, The Filthy Six\, John Etheridge’s Blue Spirits\, Zoe Schwarz’ Blue Commotion and others. Despite his deep love of the vintage Hammond tonewheel consoles\, Pete has always had one eye on the digital clones\, though none have impressed him as much for authenticity as the Crumar Mojo which he now plays on the vast majority of his gigs and several recent recordings. \n  \nDoors open 7pm\, music from 8pm. \nTickets £10 \nhttps://www.musicglue.com/karamel \nVENUE: 4 Coburg Rd\, Wood Green\, London N22 6UJ \nBook a ticket in advance to avoid disappointment!

SUMMARY:Alan Barnes Quartet
DESCRIPTION:ALAN BARNES QUARTET kicks of the new year jazz season on Thursday 12 Jan at 8pm \nBand lineup:  Alan Barnes – Alto Sax; Kate Williams – Piano; Steve Watts – Bass; Les Cyrkel – Drums; \n“A performance by the Alan Barnes Quartet is world class. The leader is one of few saxophonists in this country capable of playing convincing bebop jazz as well as all other styles.” \n“Like Peter King\, Barnes is steeped in the language of bop\, but is such a consummate stylist that his playing tends to buck any argument that his musical approach is conservative or out of step with the times. Whether on alto\, baritone or tenor\, Barnes’ melodic sense bypasses the usual scale-running clichés that pepper the playing of lesser bop disciples.” (Peter Marsh\, BBC Music Review). \n“Barnes\, plays music that was radical 50 years ago – hard\, urban post-bop – but he infuses it with so much passion and energy you could believe it was minted on the spot\, which is always part of the story with jazz.” (John L. Walters\, The Guardian). \n\nDoors open at 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. Please book a ticket in advance. \nVENUE: MAAD (fka Karamel)\, 4 Coburg Rd\, Wood Green\, London N22 6UJ \nThe premises has a fresh air ventilation system installed throughout the restaurant and theatre. SUMMARY:In All Languages-The Music of Ornette Coleman
DESCRIPTION:Martin Speake (alto saxophone); Alyson Cawley (tenor saxophone); Jakub Cywinski (double bass); Adam Merrell (drums); \nWe are delighted to welcome award-winning saxophonist Martin Speake\, one of the most fluent and creative musicians and composers in the UK. \n“A saxophonist with an unusual turn of phrase\, a persuasively gentle sound … Martin Speake is not just a distinctive improviser but a striking composer too” – John Fordham\, The Guardian \nVideo clip 1 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XegPkpHv8NE \nVideo clip 2 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odAp8l8dhwU \nMartin Speake says: “I have been drawn to Ornette’s music since I began playing alto saxophone nearly 50 years ago. Ornette is the supreme melodist.” \nDo not miss this special evening “In All Languages” \n  \nDoors open at 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. Please book a ticket in advance. \nVENUE: MAAD (fka Karamel)\, 4 Coburg Rd\, Wood Green\, London N22 6UJ \nThe premises has a fresh air ventilation system installed throughout the restaurant and theatre. SUMMARY:AKDC band - Indo Jazz
DESCRIPTION:CLOSING GIG OF THE EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL 2022! \nCafé Kathak – Launched last year at Café Oto\, the AKDC band brings improvisational Kathak rhythms to blend with Jazz instruments to create a new never heard before sound to Indo Jazz. \nIntricate footwork performed by the critically acclaimed kathak artist Amina Khayyam to the complex mathematical patterns of Debashish Mukherjee’s tabla\, and layered by vocals by Sohini Alam\, cello by Iain McHugh and vocalised parhants by Jane Chan. \nA critically acclaimed performer\, choreographer and dance theatre maker\, Amina Khayyam began her Kathak dance training with Alpana Sengupta in Croydon progressing to professional level with Sushmita Ghosh at The Bhavan (London) under whose guidance she made her professional debut at the Purcell Room\, Southbank. Alpana introduced Amina to performance and instilled in her a deep passion to pursue it as a career. Kathak\, one of the main genres of Indian classical dance\, is traditionally regarded to have originated from the travelling bards of North India referred as Kathakars or storytellers. These Kathakars wandered around and communicated legendary stories via music\, dance and songs quite like the early Greek theatre. The Kathakars communicate stories through rhythmic foot movements\, hand gestures\, facial expressions and eye work. \nDebasish Mukherjee is among the leading tabla players to have emerged from the great musical hub of Calcutta. He trained with the doyen of the legendary Benares gharana\, Pandit Kishan Maharaj\, as well as with his father Pandit Kanai Mukherjee and with his father’s Guru\, Pandit Nanku Maharaj\, for over two decades from 1976. A sought-after soloist and accompanist for music and dance\, Debasish has played for such luminaries as Pandit Birju Maharaj (dance)\, Ustad Rashid Khan (vocal)\, Pandit Rajan Shajan Mishra (vocal) and Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee (sitar) amongst others. An “A-grade” artist with All India Radio\, Debasish maintains a performance profile in India\, the UK and Europe. \nAs a vocalist\, Sohini Alam has worked on music for dance\, theatre\, and film. She is the lead singer of the bands Khiyo\, Lokkhi Terra and has performed internationally on stage\, radio\, and television. Sohini is trained primarily in Nazrul Sangeet but has since branched out into folk\, Rabindra Sangeet and contemporary music. While she sings mainly in Bengali\, she has also sung in English for After Art\, in English/Spanish for Lokkhi Terra and in English/Hindi for Kanjoos – The Miser\, Dick Whittington Goes Bollywood\, and Bollywood Cinderella. She sang in Tamil and Roma for a collaboration with the Mongooses Musical Playbox and in Yoruba for Lokkhi Terra’s CubAfrobeat collaboration with Dele Sosimi. \nIain McHugh is a Cellist born and trained in Scotland. Iain studied Cello at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland under Robert Irvine and Rudi De Groote and in 2013\, he joined the Roslin String quartet. Iain has performed premieres in a number of different events festivals across Scotland including: Against All Things Ending (Simon Smith); Harbour Dreams (Oliver Searle); Game (Claire McCue) at The Cottier Chamber Project; many new works in the RCS PLUG festivals; and the operas Welcome Inn (Jason Staddon) and Puddle Wonderful (Matthew Whiteside) at Sound Festival in Aberdeen. \nDoors open 5pm\, performance from 6pm. SUMMARY:Art Themen\, Thane & the Villeins
DESCRIPTION:PART OF EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL 2022! \nFantastically playful\, inventive and one of Britain’s leading tenor saxophonists for over 50 years\,** Art Themen** performs with his trio from the latest album ‘Thane and the Villeins’\, with organist\, Pete Whittaker and drummer\, George Double. \n“A first-rate trio..an excellent set..Themen is one of the very few totally original\, utterly engaging jazz musicians around” ** Dave Gelly – THE OBSERVER** \nExciting and innovative saxophonist\, Art Themen has been a beloved character of the British jazz scene for many years\, famously combining his role as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with saxophone duties in the bands of Alexis Korner and Stan Tracey among many others. Described by The Observer as “One of the tiny handful of undeniably perfect jazz musicians”\, he remains as brilliant and inimitable as ever. \nWith organist Pete Whittaker\, formerly of The Nigel Price Organ Trio\, and drummer George Double who has worked as sideman to Shirley Bassey and Jack Jones\, Themen has formed a new trio. Their album “Thane & The Villeins” is a collection of groove-led re-imaginings of quirky curiosities from the jazz canon\, acting as a perfect vehicle for the twinkly mischief of this genuine grandee of British jazz. \n*Art Themen (Saxophone). * Born in Lancashire in November 1939\, Art played clarinet at school and in 1958 went to Cambridge University to study medicine where he played in the University jazz group. He moved to London in1961 to study at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School and began to play on the London scene with Dave Gelly\, Alexis Korner and Graham Bond. He successfully combined his medical career as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with being a popular jazz musician. He began working with Stan Tracey in 1974 and continued with various Tracey groups until 1995. He was now playing soprano sax and sopranino sax as well as the more usual tenor sax. \nHe started to work with Michael Garrick in the 1960s and continued to work with Michael Garrick’s Sextet and with Don Weller during his long association with Stan Tracey. He has also accompanied many visiting US musicians including Al Haig\, Red Rodney and Billy Mitchell and worked with Nat Adderley. With various groups he has toured extensively including India\, the Middle East\, Greece\, South America\, Switzerland\, Indonesia and played at many festivals. He has a quirky\, very original style of playing. \nHe led own quintet or quartet from 1996 and co-led a band with Alan Barnes and he has continued to freelance into the early 2000s with Georgie Fame and Don Weller amongst others. He now leads the trio ‘Thane & The Villeins’ with Pete Whittaker & George Double. \n*Pete Whittaker (Organ). * Hammond Organist Pete Whittaker studied music at the University of East Anglia\, gaining a masters degree in electroacoustic composition. Having harboured since his mid-teens a subconscious love of jazz\, Pete became very much into the genre while at college. Jazz piano in due course gave way to the discovery of that force-of-nature known to the world as the organist Jimmy Smith\, the single most important jazz Hammond innovator ever. The sound of those old Blue Note and Verve albums from the 1950s and 60s grabbed Pete by his charity-shop lapels and made him determined to recreate the sounds for himself. \nPete was fortunate to gain wider experience and exposure in the 1990s by touring with a couple of high-profile rock bands. The first of these was an Indie-ish melodic rock band (with a distinct folk-music influence) called The Wonder Stuff. Pete toured UK\, Europe and North America with them (on and off)from 1991 to their initial disintegration in 1994. \nSince moving to London in the late 1990s\, Pete has had his backside kicked (musically and literally) by many fine jazz musicians. He will be eternally grateful to them all\, and strives to learn from their talent and his own mistakes. \n*George Double (Drums). * George’s playing and recording credits include Dame Shirley Bassey\, Grammy Award Winner Jack Jones\, Marc Almond\, Mica Paris\, Ruthie Henshall and Kym Mazelle. His West End and touring theatre record includes stints on Wicked\, Guys and Dolls\, Avenue Q\, Sinatra and Anything Goes. \nHe is active on the British jazz scene and appears regularly at Ronnie Scott’s club in London and elsewhere as a freelancer (with Chris Ingham\, John Etheridge\, Art Themen\, Digby Fairweather\, Derek Nash and many others). He is also curator of Hadleigh and Southwold Jazz Clubs. \nGeorge is a senior drum kit consultant for Trinity College London. His books and arrangements are published by Trinity and Faber Music\, for whom he has run seminars and workshops in Hong Kong\, Singapore\, Malaysia\, Dubai and Abu Dhabi as well as at MusikMesse Frankfurt\, the London Drum Show and around the UK. He worked as an examiner for Trinity and formerly\, Guildhall School of Music and Drama from 2002-2016. \nVideo clip: https://youtu.be/0PVffJtt3J8?t=14 \nVideo trailer: https://youtu.be/IaVe-ewSpls \nDoors open 7pm\, music from 8pm.
