In 1974 after I had left school at 16\, I was working in an office and saved up enough money to buy a saxophone after realising there must be more to life than filling out motor insurance claim forms and staring at the office clock hoping it would get to 5pm quickly each day. \nOrnette was an early influence and the album Live At The Golden Circle was the first I purchased (along with Bird and Diz) and the tune Dee Dee was the first I tried to learn. The saxophone I bought was a white plastic Grafton alto as I had seen a photo of Ornette with one on those early Atlantic Records albums. \nOver the years in my musical and personal development I have a returned to Ornette Coleman and Charlie Parker for further inspiration and each time discovering something new about them and deepening my connection with this music. I have had projects playing this music with like minded souls over the years. \nI am going through an Ornette period again now and have transcribed many of these wonderful melodies. In fact working out these tunes has kept me going through this challenging period in our history. This new band are all more recent collaborators and is wonderful to hear how they interpret these melodies as inspirations for improvising together and telling their own story. \nMany of Ornette’s melodies have become ‘standards’ being played by many musicians all over the world such as Lonely Woman\, Ramblin’ and Law Years but there are many undiscovered gems that are not played as often or at all by others. \nWe have 90 tunes to draw on already and the repertoire is growing. \nThis music is endless. SUMMARY:Noah Stoneman IMPROV
DESCRIPTION:Noah presents a monthly night of Improvisational freestyle jazz at Karamel. \nBand line-up: Noah Stoneman (piano); Caius Williams (bass); Mark Sanders (drums). \nNoah Stoneman is a 22 year old pianist and composer from North London. He is currently studying at the Royal Academy of music and is adept at a wide range of musical idioms. What binds these different languages together is improvisation; an art which Noah aims to master throughout his career. He regularly performs as a sideman for some of the finest musicians across the UK from all generations. \nAs a composer\, Noah takes influence from all walks of music both contemporary and traditional. He is equally adept at subtly emotive synthesiser world-building as well as classic orchestral/chamber themes inspired by timeless predecessors. Noah’s music has been performed at music festivals and venues around the world\, including Brainchild festival\, Manchester Jazz Festival\, La Petite Halle in Paris and Somersby Festival in Lisbon. Over the last 3 years he has taken up contemporary classical composition tuition with Ruth Byrchmore and Alex Hills at the Royal Academy of Music. Noah has composed and arranged for myriad ensembles ranging from Piano Trio\, Big Band\, Improvising Octet\, String Quartet and recently had 2 original song cycles for piano and Opera Soprano performed at the RAM ‘Students Create’ festival. In 2022 Noah composed the original score for the mini series ‘Life in Love’ directed by Abel Rubinstein\, which was broadcast on ITV and went on to be shown at the BFI London Film Festival. \nIn October 2021\, Noah recorded his debut album at Livingston Studios\, London\, with his trio of Will Sach on bass and Luca Caruso on drums. Comprised of all original material and produced by long-time mentor and ECM recording artist Kit Downes\, the record offers a fresh poetic statement that realises Stoneman’s compositional identity. \n  \nDoors open 7pm\, music from 8pm. \nA pre-show menu is available from 6.30pm. We both felt that the time had arrived to play music of our choice together with some of the finest jazz musicians working in Britain today. As a result Still Waters is now one of the most accomplished and creative bands around. \nAlthough a classic quintet of two front line and rhythm\, Still Waters plays radical and original music\, ranging from gentle\, quietly pastoral and melodic music\, reflecting the band’s name\, through to dynamic\, free improvisation. \nI am immensely proud of the band. The main thing to say about it is that it is a BAND and not just a collection of individual musicians; in other words the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The level of creativity\, adventure and interplay on gigs never ceases to astonish me; no two gigs are ever the same and this is truer of Still Waters than of any other band I’ve ever played in. \nDave Green\, is without doubt the foundation of Still Waters. He has a way of finding the right thing to do at exactly the right time. Whatever else goes on around him he always keeps it right there\, allowing everybody else maximum freedom. \nPaul Clarvis is the most idiosyncratic\, original and creative drummer in British jazz who\, together with pianist Barry Green’s ability to move from straight ahead playing to wayward free improvisation\, makes the rhythm section an absolute joy. I love its ability to go anywhere it chooses to go. \nMy partner on the front line\, Pete Hurt\, is not only a wonderful and inventive saxophone player but also an all round accomplished master musician and one of Britain’s very greatest composers of music for big band. \n  \nDoors open at 7pm\, and music starts at 8pm. \nBook a ticket in advance to avoid disappointment. \nA pre-show menu is available from 6.30pm. His household mixed the sounds of reggae with Ghanaian high-life music and the joy\, love and power of music became a major part of his childhood. \nIt was at Tomorrow’s Warriors that Gary Crosby encouraged David to swap from alto to tenor sax\, the instrument he now favours. \nDavid has gone on to perform regularly with the Gary Crosby Sextet for the acclaimed Mingus Moves series of concerts in 2022/23.
