SUMMARY:In All Languages-The Music of Ornette Coleman
DESCRIPTION:Martin Speake (alto saxophone); Alyson Cawley (tenor saxophone); Jakub Cywinski (double bass); Adam Merrell (drums); \nWe are delighted to welcome award-winning saxophonist Martin Speake\, one of the most fluent and creative musicians and composers in the UK. \n“A saxophonist with an unusual turn of phrase\, a persuasively gentle sound … Martin Speake is not just a distinctive improviser but a striking composer too” – John Fordham\, The Guardian \nVideo clip 1 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XegPkpHv8NE \nVideo clip 2 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odAp8l8dhwU \nMartin Speake says: “I have been drawn to Ornette’s music since I began playing alto saxophone nearly 50 years ago. In 1974 after I had left school at 16\, I was working in an office and saved up enough money to buy a saxophone after realising there must be more to life than filling out motor insurance claim forms and staring at the office clock hoping it would get to 5pm quickly each day. \nOrnette was an early influence and the album Live At The Golden Circle was the first I purchased (along with Bird and Diz) and the tune Dee Dee was the first I tried to learn. The saxophone I bought was a white plastic Grafton alto as I had seen a photo of Ornette with one on those early Atlantic Records albums. \nOver the years in my musical and personal development I have a returned to Ornette Coleman and Charlie Parker for further inspiration and each time discovering something new about them and deepening my connection with this music. I have had projects playing this music with like minded souls over the years. \nI am going through an Ornette period again now and have transcribed many of these wonderful melodies. In fact working out these tunes has kept me going through this challenging period in our history. This new band are all more recent collaborators and is wonderful to hear how they interpret these melodies as inspirations for improvising together and telling their own story. \nMany of Ornette’s melodies have become ‘standards’ being played by many musicians all over the world such as Lonely Woman\, Ramblin’ and Law Years but there are many undiscovered gems that are not played as often or at all by others. \nWe have 90 tunes to draw on already and the repertoire is growing. \nThis music is endless. Ornette is the supreme melodist.” \nDo not miss this special evening “In All Languages” \n  \nDoors open at 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. Please book a ticket in advance. \nVENUE: MAAD (fka Karamel)\, 4 Coburg Rd\, Wood Green\, London N22 6UJ \nThe premises has a fresh air ventilation system installed throughout the restaurant and theatre. Menu is available at maad.co

SUMMARY:TRISTAN MAILLIOT QUARTET: REMEMBERING CHICK COREA
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tristan Mailliot Quartet: Remembering Chick Corea \nJazz Legend\, Pianist and Composer Chick Corea\, who passed away a year ago\, has left a remarkable and unforgettable legacy. In his long career\, he recorded close to 90 albums as a bandleader or co-leader and won 23 Grammys\, and many of his compositions have become jazz standards\, marked by his dreamy but brightly illuminated harmonies and ear-grabbing melodies. \nDrummer Tristan Mailliot has assembled a quartet of top flight musicians\, including BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist Tom Ridout on sax\, who share a deep love of Chick’s music . Together they play a varied set of music drawn Chick’s huge legacy of compositions\, from the popular Latin-influenced classics such as “Spain” and “Armando’s Rhumba” to the lesser known “Morning Sprite” \, the introspective “Futures” and the modal jazz of “Humpty Dumpty” or “Dr Joe”. \nAn evening celebrating the music of this great and much missed musician\, in the company of some of the stars of the current scene. \nFeaturing Tristan Mailliot – drums\, Chris Eldred – piano\, Tom Ridout – sax\, Flo Moore – bass \nDoors open at 7pm\, and music starts at 8pm. \nBook a ticket in advance to avoid disappointment! \nOptional – Pre-gig meal available from the Karamel Kitchen!

SUMMARY:Loz Speyer's INNER SPACE
DESCRIPTION:LOZ SPEYER’S INNER SPACE Loz Speyer – trumpet\, flugelhorn; Dee Byrne – alto sax; Special guest\, Josephine Davies – tenor sax; Olie Brice – double bass; Gary Willcox – drums; \nInner Space plays Jazz of a rare warmth and immediacy – compositions for improvisers with roots in both jazz and free improv. Loz Speyer’s music for Inner Space comes with references from deep within the jazz tradition – swing\, bebop\, free jazz and all the way back to New Orleans – arranged in such a way as to give the group space to explore new areas and discover where the music might GO. Each piece evolves its own unique form\, feeling and direction\, five highly distinctive musicians working it all out in the here and NOW. \nInner Space has been touring over the last year with fresh sounds in the saxophone section\, building on a band sound developed through some years of touring and recording\, with bassist Olie Brice and drummer Gary Willcox. On this night at Karamel\, Inner Space features the amazing Dee Byrne on alto sax – and as a special guest\, the wonderful Josephine Davies on tenor sax. Josephine was Jazz instrumentalist of the Year in the 2019 Parliamentary Jazz awards and leads her own big band and the trio Satori. \nAlong with music from the album “Life on the Edge” (Leo Records 2017)\, Inner Space explores some extended forms in the shape of a growing set of Jazz Portrait compositions – with titles such as “Innate Ornette”\, “Chimes for Grimes” and “Sun the One Ra the Far!” It may seems audacious to attempt to characterise in music such seminal and inspirational figures? – but it comes naturally enough from the musicians’ own lifelong relationship with their music\, as a way to make sense of that legacy in our own TIME. The pieces inspired by actual encounters come with stories that emerge in the live situation – both musicians and audience can tap into deep sources of inspiration. \n“The integrity they bring to the emerging free jazz push-pull structure of ’Space Music’ pilots the musicians further towards destinations unknown.” – Philip Clark\, Jazzwise \n“Superb outing\, that effectively highlights the leader’s jarring and perceptively constructed compositions.” – Glen Astarita\, All About Jazz \n“Upon listening\, I was hooked…. the contrapuntal moments when the horns venture just over the edge make me think that if ODJB had arrived 100 years later they may have sounded like this.” – Lance Liddle\, Bebop Spoken Here \n\n: Sun the One Ra the Far – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGl0hctHYKU \nalbum\, Life on the Edge: https://spherical-records.bandcamp.com/album/life-on-the-edge \nDoors open 7pm\, music from 8pm. \nA pre-show menu is available from 6.30pm\, if you’d like to reserve a table\, please email karamel8775@gmail.com with your arrival time\, group size and preferred menu choices.

SUMMARY:Philip Clouts Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Melodic jazz with inspira3ons from around the world. \nCape Town-born pianist/composer Clouts’ South African roots have inspired a voyage of discovery that has led to him soaking up the joyful passion of Caribbean calypso\, the bluesy melodies of middle eastern praise songs\, the exuberant sway of Cuban dance music and the tuneful essence of Gospel while honouring jazz heroes including Bill Evans\, Keith Jarrett\, and Charles Lloyd. \nAs a key member of the popular London-based world jazz ensemble Zubop and its offshoot ZubopGambia\, with BBC World Music award-winner Juldeh Camara\, Clouts created a solid body of work with African roots. Since moving to Dorset in 2006 he has responded to his new surroundings with impressionisti compositions that complement his world music interests\, resona3ng with strong themes and packing a mighty rhythmical punch. \nThe latest CD from the Philip Clouts Quartet is one of the first waves of releases on the new jazz imprint from prestigious label Odradek Records. On this album\, titled Umoya (named from the Zulu word for life force)\, Clouts’ African inspirations extend beyond Cape jazz to Gnawa music and Afrobeat\, and further to pan-European folksong and soul-jazz. Joined by rising star saxophonist Samuel Eagles\, bassist Tim Fairhall and drummer Ted Carrasco\, he brings his musical journey alive with superb musicianship and infectious vigour. \nPRESS “The best of British jazz” Chris Phillips Jazz FM “Precise ebullience and relaxed funkiness” The Guardian “A revelatory experience” UK Vibe “Clouts’ compositions are strong and likable. The quartet’s playing is similarly engaging\, a feeling of optimism pervading the tunes with a life force of its own” All About Jazz “It has a very infectious feel-good quality about it” Jazz FM “Clouts’ affection for a gospel-powered earthiness emerges in the relaxed funkiness of his piano solo” The Guardian “Clouts’ compositions are highly melodic\, rhythmically varied\, and stylistically and culturally diverse. In this quartet\, he has musicians capable of bringing his ideas to colourful and vital fruition” Ian Mann \nLINKS Youtube Streaming Website \nSOCIAL MEDIA LINKS Twitter: @philipclouts Facebook: @philipcloutsquartet

SUMMARY:Noah Stoneman presents freestyle jazz
DESCRIPTION:Noah presents a monthly night of freestyle jazz at Karamel. \nBand line-up to follow. \nNoah Stoneman is a 22 year old pianist and composer from North London. He is currently studying at the Royal Academy of music and is adept at a wide range of musical idioms. What binds these different languages together is improvisation; an art which Noah aims to master throughout his career. He regularly performs as a sideman for some of the finest musicians across the UK from all generations. \nAs a composer\, Noah takes influence from all walks of music both contemporary and traditional. He is equally adept at subtly emotive synthesiser world-building as well as classic orchestral/chamber themes inspired by timeless predecessors. Noah’s music has been performed at music festivals and venues around the world\, including Brainchild festival\, Manchester Jazz Festival\, La Petite Halle in Paris and Somersby Festival in Lisbon. Over the last 3 years he has taken up contemporary classical composition tuition with Ruth Byrchmore and Alex Hills at the Royal Academy of Music. Noah has composed and arranged for myriad ensembles ranging from Piano Trio\, Big Band\, Improvising Octet\, String Quartet and recently had 2 original song cycles for piano and Opera Soprano performed at the RAM ‘Students Create’ festival. In 2022 Noah composed the original score for the mini series ‘Life in Love’ directed by Abel Rubinstein\, which was broadcast on ITV and went on to be shown at the BFI London Film Festival. \nIn October 2021\, Noah recorded his debut album at Livingston Studios\, London\, with his trio of Will Sach on bass and Luca Caruso on drums. Comprised of all original material and produced by long-time mentor and ECM recording artist Kit Downes\, the record offers a fresh poetic statement that realises Stoneman’s compositional identity. \nDoors open 7pm\, music from 8pm. \nA pre-show menu is available from 6.30pm\, if you’d like to reserve a table\, please email karamel8775@gmail.com with your arrival time\, group size and preferred menu choices.

SUMMARY:George Crotty Trio
DESCRIPTION:Doors open 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. \nBand line-up: George Crotty\, (cello)\, John Murchison (bass) \, Jeremy Smith\, (percussion) \nKnown for their expressive fluidity and modal orientation\, The George Crotty Trio engages in cross-cultural interplay within modal jazz\, Indian raga\, and Arabic maqam\, all while pushing the boundaries of the cello as a jazz instrument\, on which bandleader George Crotty has forged his own exciting vocabulary.\nFollowing his graduation from the Berklee College of Music\, Crotty immersed himself in New York’s jazz and world music scenes\, playing with several ensembles\, such as the Brooklyn Raga Massive\, and the Detroit-based National Arab Orchestra. Additionally\, he has enjoyed fruitful collaborations with Simon Shaheen\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Anat Cohen\, and Darol Anger.\nPowered by percussionist Jeremy Smith and bassist John Murchsion\, The George Crotty Trio’s sound deviates from a trio’s typical hierarchy. The three players intertwine on their own spontaneous terms in an exploration of groove and colour\, lending Crotty’s tunes an exciting three-dimensional quality. \n“Transcends the trio format.” – The WholeNote \n“A stream of genre-blurring invention.” – All About Jazz \n“Sounds like the cosmopolitan centre Toronto is.” – Canadian Music Centre \nwww .georegcrotty.com/trio www.facebook.com/georgecrottycello www.instagram.com/georgecrottycello https://georgecrotty.bandcamp.com/album/chronotope \nKaramel – 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ The Karamel vegan kitchen will be serving food until 9.30pm.
