SUMMARY:Chris Laurence Quartet
DESCRIPTION:A chance to hear one of the most accomplished British bands spanning two generations – the 1960’s new music era represented by Chris Laurence and Frank Ricotti and the Loose Tubes era of the 1980’s represented by Martin France and John Paricelli. They will be playing music from their second recording released in 2020; tunes that have been honed over the decades and are full of all the good things of life: warmth\, humour\, melancholy\, and memories. \nLaurence’s group is notable for the acclaim each member has in Britain. In their debut CD ‘New View’ whether it’s the clean electric tone of his work on “Falling Grace\,” the distorted edge of his own buoyant 5/4 “Scrim” or his classical guitar work on Wheeler’s melancholy ballad “Where Do We Go From Here?” \nJohn Parricelli is a musical chameleon who paradoxically retains his personality. Like John Parricelli\, Frank Ricotti is a player who leans towards spare interpretation\, abstract colouration and a lyrical approach to soloing. Laurence is clearly a democratic leader\, but what he brings to this band\, in addition to an astute choice of band mates and material\, is a homage to the great British jazz standards. \nBassist Chris Laurence has been a fixture on the British scene for many years\, working regularly in the jazz sphere with artists including reedman John Surman\, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and pianist John Taylor. He’s recorded pop sessions with the likes of Elvis Costello\, Sting and David Gilmour\, and remains active in the classical community\, playing on orchestral film soundtracks including The Constant Gardener and The Man in the Iron Mask. \nLine Up: Chris Laurence – double bass\, John Parricelli – guitar\, Frank Ricotti – vibraphone and Martin France – drums \nVideo Link \nDoors open at 7pm\, and music starts at 8pm. \nTickets £10 \nVenue: MAAD (fka Karamel)\, 4 Coburg Rd\, Wood Green\, London N22 6UJ \nThe premises has a fresh air ventilation system installed throughout the restaurant and theatre.

SUMMARY:Private View of new exhibition ‘We Will Enjoy Flowers Again’ by Alina Potemska.
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to the Private Viewing of the exhibition ” We Will Enjoy Flowers Again” by Alina Potemska at the Karamel Gallery (MAAD\, 4 Coburg Road\, London N22 6UJ). \nWhen: Wednesday 12 October\, 6-8pm. \nRSVP via Eventbrite. \nArtist statement: \nI went to Ukraine just for three days during Easter to see my brother. I will never forget that fear while hearing an air siren and dealing with the silent public agreement to be killed any day. Even though it was a relatively safe place. This experience is extremely scary and damaging. Most people won’t share their real experiences and they should not\, they need time to pass thought to heal wounds\, to find stability. They need to get used to not being scared of a clap\, plane sound\, or any other unexpected loud sound. \nUkrainians want to cherish life\, enjoy flowers\, sing songs and draw. And we will. We just need time. To love. To win. And maybe a tiny bit of support. \n  \n08.03.22 “I wish you to enjoy flowers again!” \n  \nMy brother wished it to my mum and me on International Women’s Day. Usually\, he buys us flowers and nice presents on this day. Now we are all miles apart\, not even able either to buy flowers\, neither to receive them nor even think about presents. The idea of enjoying beauty felt inappropriate that day. The only thing we were focusing on was surviving… \nArt heals. Art helps to talk and share. I’ve always been the one who carried a small sketchbook with a pen. Now it is turning into a digital version\, but the concept remains: observe\, feel\, document. \n\nOn the 24th of February\, life changed significantly. Even being safe myself\, I stopped doing everything I used to. I already experienced that feeling during the Revolution of Dignity in 2013/14\, the annexation of Crimea the same year\, and the long-lasting war since then in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. \nThis strange feeling of responsibility to synchronise your whole life with political changes in your country. Being settled in London for a few years hasn’t separated me from the same feeling about my home country. Art saved me again. An emotional rollercoaster that pushed all anxiety feelings to the limit had to be balanced in some way. The inhumane behaviour of occupiers\, contrasting sacrificing of Ukrainian heroes more honourable than any Marvel movie ever seen\, constant worry about friends and family… I just kept drawing… \n  \n– Dr Alina Potemska – visual artist and illustrator\, board game designer\, Doctor of Arts. \n  \nArtist’s Bio \n  \nAlina Potemska was born in Kyiv and graduated from The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. She specialises in visual arts and games. She designs board games and researches effective methods of using games as an educative and healing tool. She considers game as art medium providing fundamental help in understanding the world. Usually she captures daily scenes through drawings and illustrations. After a full-scale invasion in her home country\, she focused on illustration as a way to spread the word of stories from her land. She has exhibited in solo and group shows in many countries\, including the UK\, USA\, France\, Poland\, and Ukraine\, introducing the different sides and similarities in illustration and games. \n  \nwww.potemska.com instagram.com/akilina.po behance.net/potemska \n  \nThe exhibition is on display from 27 September to 29 October 2022 at the Karamel Gallery\, Opening times: Wed-Sat 12-8pm. SUMMARY:Tomorrow’s Warriors presents JAM String Collective
DESCRIPTION:Tomorrow’s Warriors presents JAM String Collective. A Contemporary Jazz String trio playing original compositions and arrangements featuring Julia Dos Reis (viola)\, Annalise Lam (violin)\, and Miranda Lewis-Brown (cello). \n  \nThe trio plays their own re-imaginings of works by jazz heavy weights\, such as Ornette Coleman\, Thelonious Monk\, and Kenny Wheeler\, as well as their own compositions. The arrangements leave lots of space for moments of freeness\, with a heavy focus on interaction and improvisation. \nJulia and Miranda met in 2015 through Gary Crosby’s (OBE) Tomorrow’s Warriors Jazz String project\, StringTing\, with whom they have gigged extensively across the UK and Europe. They have toured with larger Warrior ensembles such as Peter Edward’s NuCivilisation Orchestra\, and Jazz Jamaica\, as well as played their own gigs – as a trio and quartet – in venues such as Ronnie Scott’s\, Pizza Express Club Soho\, The Purcell Room SBC. In 2019 they supported legendary saxophonist\, Steve Williamson\, in a UK tour. \nIn more recent years Annalise also joined the larger collective of StringTing\, first meeting Julia at a Warrior’s workshop led by jazz violinist extraordinaire\, Benet McClean. Julia and Annalise struck up a relationship which continued through their Masters studies at Guildhall\, where they would often meet to jam ideas\, many of which have continued into JAM. The JAM String Collective brings the trio together in a new project\, based in London and Bristol. In 2022 they released a live performance of Kenny Wheeler’s classic Kind Folk. Treating the group as a collective\, they have plans to involve other instrumentalists and performers for future projects. \n  \n  \nDoors open at 7pm\, music starts at 8pm. Please book a ticket in advance. \nVENUE: MAAD (fka Karamel)\, 4 Coburg Rd\, Wood Green\, London N22 6UJ \nThe premises has a fresh air ventilation system installed throughout the restaurant and theatre.
