We welcome you to come and see the work of our students across several of our year long courses at TheESOP.

The Essential School of Painting is an alternative art school based in Wood Green, London, specialising in painting and drawing classes taught by leading contemporary artists. The ESOP offers exciting, intellectually rigorous courses with the intention of advancing painting in the 21st Century.

TheESOP, its founders and tutors have a deeply held belief in the power of art to transform lives and a particular interest in exploring new models for art education beyond school, championing the twin ideals of excellence and affordability in a highly pressured sector when university fees are soaring and student/ tutor contact time is at an all-time low.

The Essential School of Painting was founded 14 years ago with strong links to Glasgow School of Art with several tutors and President hailing from the GSA. It has grown from humble beginnings into an established institution holding from one-day to year-long courses and workshops for all levels of experience; from beginners to postgraduate and professional artists. TheESOP has enlisted the support of a long list of celebrated artists to teach or lecture at the school. These include Grayson Perry CBE RA, Eileen Cooper OBE RA, David Mach RA, Bob and Roberta Smith OBE RA, Dr Sandy Moffat OBE RSA and the late Dr Leonard McComb RA

With a keen emphasis on building communities through which students and artists can support each other beyond their courses, TheESOP seeks to give opportunities for students to receive what they truly need to reach their potential and benefit wider society in the process. Affordability is a crucial element for emerging artists to progress. Currently an MA is beyond the financial reach of many. TheESOP course costs are a fraction of the mainstream courses with the quality of tutors being equal and tutor contact time greater. Painting is particularly supported at TheESOP as training is often found to be languishing in art education in favour of more conceptual approaches. Art materials are included in the course fee, staving off “materials poverty”.

TheESOP is delighted to announce we have just received funding for three Young Person’s scholarships aged 19 – 30. Publicity and how to apply for these will be out soon.
