Surma

“The young multi-instrumentalist combines her guitar and bass hooks with an unusual mix of different electronic sounds via the help of loop pedals. The result is wonderful music somewhere between pop, jazz and ambient. Her beautifully fragile voice is at the very centre of her first single ‘Maasai’. ”

The 21-year old Portuguese musician has only just started her career and already appeared on her home country’s most important festivals, as well recently touring Spain, France and Germany. Her debut album is due for the coming winter season.

Surma is Débora Umbelino, one-woman band from Leiria that twists knobs, presses buttons and plays guitars to make experimental and fascinating music. In Surma’s music, rock and jazz fuse with electronics in the pursuit of an identity that does not want o stick to formulas. That’s surely explains why Surma has become so popular in the alternative Portuguese scene, even though Débora only became Surma in 2014. The enthusiasm around her first single, a sweet and strange song over dreamy electronics called Maasai, only reinforced the interest in Surma’s music, as did the video for the song, filmed in the ghost city of Doel, Belgium.
